I admit I waited a while to sync but this morning before I synced my device had the date of Nov 1 which seems impossible since I'm not a time traveler. After synching the date corrected but the app showed 3,041 steps and the device had 211 steps. I synced again and now it's still wrong. There is no new upgrade to my app. So I think I got a bad device. Any ideas?

Hi, @Folkie it sounds like your Fitbit had a bit of a hiccup when it was resetting as it is designed to do every night at midnight and actually reset twice. If you live somewhere where the clocks have recently changed due to the end of summer time then it is possible that it somehow received the reset message twice the first time under the old time and the second time under the new, and that is why it jumped a day. When you synced the time and day corrected itself. The extra steps will be ones the Fitbit detected while it was on the wrong day.
This does not sound likely to be a defect in the device and annoying as it is I would not worry about it happening again.
You may want to give your Fitbit a restart as that is always a useful trouble shooting step to make sure the Fitbit is behaving as expected. A restart will not cause any loss of data.
