You can find it in the Setting in your Ionic.
Dim, Normal, Strong and Auto

Where is the setting for this? On the watch or in the app? In the Fitbit app under settings I do not see it.

You swipe to the left from the Ionic's clock face until you find "Settings" and then tap there. The first thing that you'll see there is "Brightness."

How does auto setting know the proper brightness, does it just change with time of day?

Thanks, I had been looking for the settings within the app and not on the watch face itself.

When I tap my screen settings icon it opens and closes immediately. I don’t see anything to change. Anybody have any suggestions?

It knows the proper brightness and adjusts accordingly not by time of day but because there is a light sensitivity monitor built into the display. Not sure how it appears on other Fitbits but on the Versa you can actually see a very tiny place on the right side of the screen (looks like a mini camera)...that's the ambient light sensor. I have mine set to "Auto" and it works very well. When I'm in a dimly lit area (or if it's nighttime), it automatically turns down the brightness so it's not so blinding. On the other hand when it's daytime (or if I'm in a well-lit area), it increases the brightness so it's very visible. LOVE this feature!

I have a versa and all of a sudden I could not find the steps I take during the day and the brightness keeps fading. I tried to find the little mini looking camera on the watch but couldn't find it. Is it under settings or on the main watch screen?

Ok, I found it. I had the GPS turned on and when I turned it off the brightness came back to normal.

How can you adjust your brightness if you've turned it to pitch black accidentally.....? Is there a way to do this from the desktop dashboard?

If the brightness on my Charge 3 is so dim you can’t read it, what’s the use in trying to get to the settings app? I can’t tell if I’m there or not, because I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING!
Is there a way to change settings externally? (iPhone, Computer, etc.)

Me too. Since no one's answered in the last 5 months, guess I'll have to buy a different tracker as this one is USELESS
