Welcome top the forums!

Biking is not stepped based so it will never be accurate. Its better to manually add it

Hope to see you around!

@Sarahbjaneb It may be useful for you to take a look at the following help article regarding active minutes (here). It goes about explaining how active minutes are awarded.

I am pretty sure I get active minutes when cycling. So far I thought active minutes are not step-based but they depend on the level of exertion ( which is indicated with the use of HR ). I think the article linked by @N8teGee states something similar. However, I always enable Bike exercise manually, never rely on autodetection. Not sure whether it makes any difference ( I believe it may if we go explicitly into the exercise mode ).

@Sarahbjaneb   I want to add some additional information, in addition to the help given by @N8teGee .  Just like the Help article states, active minutes are intensity related and start at or above 3 METs.  Every MET equivalent table I have reviewed gives cycling at 10 mph 4 METs.  So I suspect you need to be cycling at least 8 mph (level) to get active minutes.  Active minutes start after 10 minutes (but you do get the credit for the 10 you completed).

It is important that you get a good heart rate signal during exercise.  Fitbit recommends wearing it farther from your wrist bony prominence during exercise than during every day wear.  Fitbit uses your heart rate to calculate your calorie burn which is used to estimate METs.  The heart rate based algorithms allow for estimation of calorie burn for non-step based activities like cycling, spinning, weights, and so on.

I always use the Exercise app when cycling.  I have had inconsistent performance with auto-recognition, especially when there are stops involved.
