Hi, @Renasence! They're using a combination of your heart rate and your amount of movement. I'm assuming they have come up with a proprietary algorithm to determine which combination of the two equate to which stage of sleep you are in.

Maybe the Sleep FAQ will help.
What should I know about sleep stages?
The question was: How does Fitbit calculate the sleep stats? What technology is built into the device that calculates REM, deep sleep, etc.?
Best AnswerThank you. So if that is correct, it is all just a guess. I believe that an EEG is used in sleep labs to determine REM, light sleep, and deep sleep.
