Cannot update my Ionic, Wifi or Bluetooth

I have a Fitbit Ionic. I successfully updated the firmware when I first bought my Ionic. I think I've done one update since. For the past week, the dashboard has been telling me that there is a firmware update. I have been unable to get that update.

  • I have my Ionic connected to USB power.
  • I have both the Ionic and the computer (tablet) sitting right next to the wireless router.
  • The computer has the Wifi signal, strong.
  • The Ionic and computer are connected via Bluetooth.

When I go to the Fitbit app, sometimes I'm able to connect to our in-house Wifi. Sometimes not. When I've been able to connect, the update still fails. Once, the app asked about trying Bluetooth, so I tried Bluetooth. It started the update again. The update failed. The update continues to fail. And now, my Ionic isn't seeing the Wifi network at all.

  • I rebooted the computer, which coincidentally prompted a Windows 10 update (%$#$%#), and that finished, and I rebooted again, and everything is up and running as it should be.
  • I rebooted the Ionic.
  • I put the Ionic right on top of the wireless router.
  • The Ionic does not see the Wifi network.
  1. Is there a way to tell the Ionic to use Bluetooth (in case that might work sometime)? Because so far the only way I've been able to use Bluetooth for updates is after trying and failing with Wifi multiple times, until the app says, "Hey, shall we try Bluetooth?"
  2. Is there a way for me to send this thing back to Fitbit and have them update it themselves and tell me, "Yeah, this checks out, honest, we updated it no problem, you must be an idiot"?

There is another Fitbit Ionic user in the house. He had a LOT of problems getting set up (got his after mine), but with this update, after a few tries, he got the update. He is using a desktop computer and put the Fitbit beside the Wifi router in the other room and then went to his computer and was able to make it happen. Me? Nope.

Thanks.

Update: The app on my phone was no longer syncing at all with my Ionic, so I did the following:

  • I did a factory reset on my Ionic.
  • Uninstalled the app from my phone.
  • Installed the app fresh onto my phone.
  • Am now setting up my Ionic. So far it appears to be doing whatever it needs to do.

Will report what I learn.

Two things:

First, my phone app sat there at Step 1 Connecting... for three hours. Finally I decided to start over. But I checked to see if things would work, and of course they did.

So one of the things Fitbit has to correct is that the reporting on the update process is completely flawed.

Second, I came here to report this. And I can't find my post by going to my profile. I had to actually search for it in the list of posts. That's... backwards. Fitbit, really, this stuff has been solved for decades. I know. I was there. I was online before the Internet. FIX IT.

I'm just a little annoyed.

No idea if everything is working right now, but I've rebuilt so many computers, no surprise I went there. Should have done it days ago.
