I went to perform a factory reset and now my fitbit has a big x on the screen with Data not cleared Sync and try again but it won't let go any further.

Seems odd that after trying our factory reset your device is only showing an X, can you please let me know why did you tried our factory reset procedure? Were you experiencing an issue before trying it? Let me share with you that occasionally a firmware update will start and stop or otherwise fail, reason why your device is only showing the X previously mentioned.
For best results, leave on all-day sync and remove other Fitbit devices from your phone's Bluetooth settings. Before you begin the firmware update, plug your watch into the charger. Make sure your watch is in range of your home or work Wi-Fi network during the update, or connected to your nearby phone for Fitbit Versa Lite Edition. If the firmware update fails, you may see this image on your watch's screen:
