I have exported TCX files from Ionic and another device. What I found is that when I paused the activity GPS still was tracking the location. Since, I was still in one place Ionic was randomly jumping in the area adding more distance. In Dashboard total distance is more or less correct but after exporting the activity is all wrong. It makes exported data useless for any comparison. Here is an example:
Yellow line is Ionic. The blue line is broken due to pausing activity but Ionic didn't disconnect the GPS for that time. So it added extra 1.6km to my short hike. The fact that GPS is not being disconnected when paused is a serious issue considering battery life. I took half an our break and for half an hour the GPS is draining battery with no reason.

I must admit that I have experienced a similar situation as you describe in the past. This was a long time ago, and for the most part I don't really use GPS. I will have to do some testing to see what I can come up with.
