I understand how the calorie counter works and that it takes into account BMR and it takes into account calories burnt while sleeping, but.....it’s telling me I’m burning 5 thousand calories a day. I don’t need a calorie counter to know that I am no where close to that. What could this be a result of.

Usually excessive calories are due to an incorrect profile setting for age, height, weight etc. It's worth a quick check of yours at https://www.fitbit.com/user/profile/edit

I'm struggling to see what else it could be. Is your step count looking reasonable? I'm wondering if it's counting far too many steps and the calorie burn is reflecting that.
As you're not getting much help from the user community you may well want to contact customer support. They may be able to see the problem from the server side. You can get them via: contact.fitbit.com
