My Ionic had an issue with the battery in December it wouldn't charge. After many hours trying all sorts of things to reset it finally started working. However the GPS is now intermittent and sometimes does get signal for 2 miles into a run. Today went for a run with colleagues, same distance and they had Garmins. Both picked up signal at the start and my Ionic after 2 miles. Even though I finished before them they had a better time per mile and more miles. Has anyone else having this issue or do Garmins have better accuracy? Prior to the reset issue, I never had a problem getting GPS

Yeah GPS accuracy is sometimes hit and miss. Many report the Garmin has better accuracy. Out of all my GPS devices the Ionic has the worst.

After a year and a half I gave up on my Ionic and switched over to the Garmin Forerunner 935. It's like going to heaven. From battery-charge (close to a week with hours of GPS connection) to display (always on) to accuracy (unlike ionic, it seems to be using GPS for distance and pace) to metrics (it measures cadence, calculates VO2max...) to app (the phone app quality is professionally designed with advanced charting, calendar, history...). And, finally, it has not lost GPS connection, even on long-distance runs, regardless of weather, sleeves over it or overhead tree interference.
Competitive athletes should not rely on fitbit. Sorry it took so long to learn this simple lesson.

I've made a similar switch as @bmw54. I'm now full-time on a Garmin Forerunner 645 (non-music). The GPS accuracy has been a blessing on trying to ensure consistent training. When running the same route, my mile marks are actually in as close to the same place each time, unlike the Ionic which was all over the place - sometimes nearly .25 miles off on varying runs.
And as @bmw54 mentioned, the training details are much more helpful - and are available on the watch immediately after a run. And the ability to track changes across runs on the web console is easier (not perfect, but ahead of Fitbit).
There are also come nice, but not-essential-to-me, features like being able to have multiple watch faces available on the watch for selection, race prediction - but they're certainly a nice addition.
I will say the transition from the Ionic display to the FR645 display has been an effort. The FR645 is not easy for me to read in low-light situations and the backlight makes it appear washed out to me. But in direct sunlight it's quite fine.
