I went for a quick walk today to see how things worked, and well, I got my answer.
I got some notifications while I was scrolling through the info on the watch, and immediately got kicked out of walking mode and into the main clock face. This happened twice, and when I was done with my walk I started a run and had my friend text me. When the notification came up I hit it and it popped the notification up. When I swiped down it took me back to the main page clock again.
Also, those first walk sections didn't get logged, but for some reason the run did, even though I couldn't tell it was still going. I can only speculate why the walks stopped.
I really want to like this thing, but after only a day and a half I'm already getting a sour taste in my mouth. First the music problems, now this...

I had something similar happen while I was swimming. I look at the face and it isn't in exercise mode anymore. Not to mention it isn't very accurate at keeping my laps counted. It's pretty frustrating!!!

Firmware 27.30.3.2.... This happened today while I was walking the mall. Set exercise to walk and worked great until I got a notification. Instead of looking at the notification, I swipe down to dismiss and the exercise mode goes away as well. When I tap the exercise icon to resume my walk, it goes to create a new one as if I didn't have one already in motion. None of the walks that I've lost this way logged through the Strava or Fitbit exercise.
I went into the walk exercise settings and set the screen to always on and set the top middle and bottom in the hopes that when I Got a notification that wouldn't change anything but it continued to cancel out my exercise when I Got a notification. Not good.
@Fitbit is this going to be corrected?

I have the same problem when swimming. I thought I saw a setting to disable notifications when exercising, but I can't find it now. For now, I think that will have to be the solution. For me, recording my workouts is more important than the notifications.
I read on another posting that there is nothing they can do to stop it per fitbit. I'll try to find that post again.

Same issue here with running. It is very frustrating and surprised to find such a bug still exists even today. Does the always on screen setting help? Thanks.

Here it is, May 2018, and this problem is still happening. I was riding my bike to work and got two notifications. I didn't look down at my watch, but as soon as I got to work I realized the Ionic crashed. I reset, but I lost my ride data, even though I was connected to my phone during the ride. How has this issue not been addressed yet?

It didn't happen to me since a firmware update last year. I hope yours is a one off incident. But a crashing doesn't sound like the same issue.
