How are steps counted?

How the steps count? I have iconic watch and sometimes it's count even or add numbers, also sometime it's count 7 steps at one time?  How it's work

There are motion detectors in the fitbit. When the fitbit detects that it is moving it analyses the movement to decide whether it is down to a step being made or it's just random arm movement.

 

Sometimes it needs to see a few steps before it decides they are indeed steps and that's why the count can sometimes seem to start at around 7 or so.

 

The algorithms that it uses to decide whether it's a step or not are not 100% accurate so sometimes it misses a step, other times you may get a step in error. There's a help file on this here: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1136/
