Ionic Built in GPS vs. Versa Connected GPS

Hi, before purchasing a new fitbit because my alta no longer satisfies a lot of my needs I have a few questions regarding the gps feature.

If I'm running and I don't have my phone, can I go into the gps on the ionic?

Also, do I find my pace, and split times, while I'm running in the gps app on the ionic?

And finally, I just want to be clear that if I were to buy the Versa instead, I wouldnt be able to view split times and pace while running.

Thanks!

@MelinaN Welcome to the Fitbit Community! Thanks for posting your inquiry regarding exercise tracking with Ionic and Versa.

Ionic includes built in GPS so you can track GPS data directly from your watch. Versa will need to be connected with your phone's GPS in order to do this.

Yes, you will find pace and splits with both Ionic and Versa. Check this helpful article for more details on how to track those.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted! Smiley Happy

Thanks for the information.  A question for clarity and for the avoidance of doubt.  Connected GPS in the Versa means you have to have your phone on your person while on a walk/run in order to utilize the GPS function in the Versa.  Is that correct?

Hi @k2fowler, welcome to the Community Forums! 🙂

As @Giampi71 mentions, you will need to carry your phone with you in order to be able to use Connected GPS on your Versa. You need to make sure it connects before going on your activity to ensure it will track it correctly.

Hi, can you buy a seperate gps and connect? I think a smaller device so you don't have to bring your large phone with you?

No you can't. Fitbit has decided not to allow it's trackers to connect to other separate devices, for example HR chest monitors.

Is GPS via Ionic more accurate (on average) compared to Versa (via Android phone GPS ) connection?

I noticed a big difference in results using the Ionic vs Inspire HR, both using automatic stride setting. I don't know which is right. I suppose I'll have to run a measured mile with each. Will let you know.
