Ionic GPS distance is off

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

My Ionic is always off 0.1 mile per mile. I run with friends who have Garmin or Apple Watch for their tracker and they always beep at the same time when we hit a mile.  My Ionic is .1 mile behind them.  Last week, I was hiking with my husband who has an AppleWatch and the trail was 6.6 miles, we walked that entire trail and his watch reflected it. Mine said 6.13 miles!! That's quite a difference!

So mine is off too. I compared to Runkeeper and my husbands ionic and mine is off.  I contacted Fitbit and their answer was for me not to compare my Fitbit with others. The admin was not very helpful!

Well that's discouraging. And even if we aren't comparing the trackers to others' trackers, a calculated distance should register as the correct distance on our Ionics... if a trail says 6.6 miles and other trackers are saying 6.6 miles and we all walked directly next to or in front of one another, we should all have the same distance.

@MkeRunnerGirl I've been posting about it since August and I think Fitbit sees no any issue at all. You can read a little more about my findings here:

https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Ionic/Ionic-GPS-Inaccuracies/m-p/2890584/highlight/true#M75553

The problem is using stride and steps ( somebody mentioned something like a step rate, whatever it is ) as factors when calculating the distance not just raw GPS data. Also, interesting is the fact that distance may change while coordinates obtained by GPS not ( you just standing pretty much still or GPS didn't manage to lock on yet ). It's possible that waving arms which imitates steps may add to the distance ( and use stride instead ). I don't know who came up with an idea to use stride to compute distance when there's a GPS on board, especially that if you connect GPS points and compute distance just from those you will get it correct. Moreover, when you use Bike activity, it doesn't seem to use stride to compute distance ( at least I hope so, but hey, it's Fitbit, everything possible ). Why running and walking is so broken? Nobody knows but all I know it's not an issue but feature of Ionic in eyes of the developers. Pity, because it would be enough to add an option whether you want to include stride in such computation or not.

Grrr this is frustrating for sure. I don't recall having the issues with my Surge watch either so it must be an Ionic issue.

I will try using the bike mode and see if that's more accurate, but you'd think they could figure out how to override steps when GPS is on.
