Ionic background sync Android

Hi, I noticed a while ago that my ionic only syncs when I open the Fitbit app on my android device. All my software is up to date and I have a OnePlus 7. Is this a known issue? Is there a permission I need to allow somewhere? I know there used to be a sync tool running in the notification bar but that is no longer there. Thanks!
