is it possible that a busy clock face will drain the battery faster or is my ionic getting old?

Hi @leshil2031, welcome to the Community Forums.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Let me share with you that the battery of our Ionic was designed to last 5 days, but this also depends on how frequently you use all the features of your device. That said, I recommend you charging your Fitbit device with a USB port from a computer or a UL-certified outlet into the wall and then turn off all the features that you don’t use that much.
After following the above information, please check this help article for more tips and recommendations. This article includes a restart process that will refresh the device's performance.
Let me know if further assistance is needed and if you have any additional questions.

The clock face will make little detectable reduction in battery life. It is possible that there could be a fault in the clock face code causing an issue. Unlikely - but I would select another face and try. Restart your Ionic if you haven't already done so. Failing this, a factory reset and setup again may be a last resort.
Battery longevity seems to vary - so could be an aging battery.

I have no issues charging my ionic but do not understand why the battery drain within a day. I have set to dim for brightness and do not use any other app but just for tracking steps

I am now into the 19hrs after charging to 100% and I am down to 14%. I do not think this is a normal battery life span

How old is your Ionic?
Have you restarted your ionic and phone?
Uninstalled the Fitbit app and reinstalled it - in case of an issue between your phone and the Ionic?
Reset the Ionic and paired it to your phone again?
The battery will deteriorate with age - but anything less than 3-4 years useful life really is unacceptable. My Ionic was activated late 2017 but used very little in it's first year or so. Currently I'm getting a maximum of 4 days per charge - normal use. I guess the battery capacity has reduced about 12 - 24 hours. I expect it will deteriorate fairly quickly now. The end is nigh for my Ionic I feel, Perhaps another 6 months or so if I'm lucky.
