The calorie counter on my iconic seems to be doing some strange things recently. For my height, weight and sex, my BMR should be approximately 1250 calories a day. On a rest day, when I might walk a bit or do some housework, but apart from stretching, no exercise, it reads something like 1500 for the day, which seems sensible.
But today, I did a cycling hill rep session, apparently burning 700 calories (which is about what I'd expect for what I did). I also did a weights session burning another 200. The rest of the day, I was certainly fairly sedentary but it has me burning just 700 calories for the whole of the rest of the day. That really does not add up based on my BMR (and the BMR that it seems to use on my rest days).
A different problem: At the weekend, I did a 100km route and it came back about 1000 calories under what I would expect to have burnt, based on lots of different cycling calorie calculators. When I looked at the bar graph, for the first two hours or so, it says I was burning calories at exactly the same rate the whole time (it was a hilly route so this really cannot have been the case). In the second half, the bars on the graph jump up a huge amount and suddenly vary as I would expect from the kind of route I was doing. If the whole ride had been registered like the second half, I would have burnt what I expected overall, but instead my iconic had me burning considerably fewer calories than I had the previous weekend on a route a third shorter.
So it is not that it is either consistently over or under estimating, it just seems extremely inconsistent, both in how it is using my BMR and in what it is recording when I cycle.
It is really important to me that I have an accurate calorie count as I really need neither to lose or gain weight. Any advice on how to get my iconic to be more consistent, or at least to make it count throughout my longer rides in the same way? I can do a calculation with my BMR myself if that is basically accurate.
