Ionic heart rate sensor malfuntioning

the heart rate sensor works at random recently, but mostly just reads as "--".  I've made sure it's higher up on my wrist but it also hasn't been logging my sleep appropriately anymore either.  this just started a few days ago after working fine for many months.  Heart rate sensor turns on when I enter the exercise app but then shuts off again.  fyi, heart rate sensor is turned on in the settings.  help!

Do a Restart and do it several times if necessary.

like turn it off and on?  or a factory reset?

because i've turned it off and on many times.  doesn't do anything.
