Ionic loses steps after step target reached.

Hi, today is the third time I've noticed my steps go down!  The first time it happened, I thought it must be my memory/imagination at fault; the second time I hit the 10,000 target just before I got into bed, and saw I had 10,013 steps, but my app only shows 9,993 for that day … not a major problem, annoying but minor!
However, today, half an hour ago I hit my 10,000 step target, Ionic vibrated, display showed the usual celebration/pattern for this achievement.  Now I sit down and my Ionic and app show only 7,228 steps.  Why is this happening?  I've tried a restart but it still only shows the lower amount.  I'm not set for a different time zone so am not sure what can be causing this.
