Ionic restarts on every sync after OS2 upgrade

Hello!

Yesterday I installed OS2 on my Ionic, and since then it restarts on every sync attempt. I have tried restarting the watch manually three times, as seen in another thread around here, I have tried to re install the FitBit app on my phone, nothing seemed to work. I can consistently reproduce the problem by manually starting a sync in the application.

Is there any solution to that? Is it possible to roll back to the old firmware version (no problems there)?

Thanks!

Hi @HankAT You don’t mention what phone or OS your trying to sync to. Given the problems you’re having, is there any way you could try syncing to another device or PC (W10)?

The other, more drastic, step is to try removing the Ionic from your Fitbit account, removing it from your Bluetooth settings, power cycling your phone, power cycling the Ionic and try installing it as a new device.

There is no option to roll back firmware but I have the latest version installed on my Ionic and it works fine.

Yes, sorry, of course:

I'm using a Moto G5s plus with Android 7.1.1, which has worked more or less problem free thus far.

I just tried another sync from my phone (all day sync turned off, notification widget turned off), and sure enough, the Ionic restarted itself again, but I was able to observe the behaviour more closely: it seems to slow down, freeze, and then initiate an automatic restart, which indicates to me maybe an issue with it being "overwhelmed"?

The interesting thing, though, is: the sync finishes successfully before the restart.

I currently do not have any other devices I could connect my Ionic to.

@HankAT Unfortunately I don’t currently run an Android phone and so can’t help much with regards to syncing issues. I found their multitude of different takes on what is “standard” plus adding in their own little “je ne sais quoi” too problematical.

I note that that your phone, whilst new, isn’t on the supported list of devices. Obviously no help to you, but it may go some way in explaining your issue. Hopefully resolvable. At least you say the sync completes.

Maybe try the “drastic step”. As you’re all synced, you’ll only lose time and effort.

Just tried the "drastic" way. After entering the code from the Ionic display into the FitBit app, the FitBit goes into a restart cycle while "connecting".

Now I don't have any possibility anymore to sync anything, and I am basically wearing a brick.

I did say it might take time. Adding a new device is never a 5 minute process, as it needs to go through the whole setup procedure again.

Never before when I had to do this, the Ionic went through multiple restarts. Now it is stuck in a cycle of death, turning off and on without end / progress.

Edit: retried, worked instantly, no restart, no wait, what the hell 😐

Thanks!

I have the same problem with mine and I am using a Samsung Galaxy S8. Reboots on every sync. Any response from Fitbit?

Ok me too! Stupid update took 2 days and 5 hrs to install and now mine also shuts off whenever it syncs! Especially frustrating since it does it in the middle of my workouts! I'm running in treadmill mode and I glance at it and it's back on home screen. Or any other activity.

Update: called customer support. They had me uninstall updates to factory reset and reboot. It goes back to out of box setup screen;  prompts to install New new firm update which it has been trying to do unsuccessfully for 12 hrs now. Next ima tie it to a brick and throw it in the nearest creek.

Same here, with a slight variation.  Sometimes it attempts a sync and simply never completes the sync.  Other times, the Ionic restarts, and then either I get a message that it is not connected (which is true, at the point that it is restarting), or it will continue trying to sync, but never complete the sync in this case either.

This is after having a myriad of synching problems with my former Windows phone and switching to an Android phone.  Now I am having pretty much the same syncing issues as before, but with a new phone and new OS.   The only constant is this piece of crap Ionic.

Update: it worked for a few days after removing and adding it to the app, got progressively worse, and now the Ionic is in garbage mode again. I'll try a factory reset next, and then I'm sending it back.

0 response from FitBit so far here, but in all fairness, I haven't contacted support yet, since they will only tell me what I already know (re-add to app, factory reset etc.)

If the factory reset doesn't work exchange it. I tried for 15 hrs to install the operating system unsuccessfully and then just decided to get a new one. The new one installed os2 in just under 4 hrs and after a week I have had absolutely no problems. I almost think the effort of installing the new operating system burnt out the Bluetooth if that's possible. But I do remember the original setup took all of Christmas day so it may have just always been defective.
