Ionic spontaneously behaving strangely

I have had my Ionic since February and, over the past few days, it has started behaving erratically.  I use it to count steps on aerobic equipment, such as elliptical trainers and stairmasters; track sporadic light weight workouts; track my sleep; and remind me to get off my butt and walk around a little hourly at work.  During the first couple months, I loaded a few audio tracks onto it and have used it to play those tracks a few times.  But, I haven't really taken much advantage of most of the features, aside from the exercise and sleep tracking.  So, it is lightly used and has never experienced extreme conditions.

The behaviors I've been seeing are

  • Spontaneous resets -- Sometimes several over a short period of time.
  • Random modes -- This morning, it kept going into the settings mode and vibrating spontaneously while I was still in bed and trying to sleep.
  • It stopped counting steps, heartbeats, and calories.

I have tried a couple of manual resets.  But, they haven't helped.

My Ionic is running Firmware version 32.10.20.  I believe that I haven't changed any settings and have just been using the defaults.  I loaded a few extra apps onto it early on but nothing has changed for 5 or 6 months.  I have also charged it when it has notified me that the battery is low and have used the same charger with it throughout the time I've had it.  I gently rinse it after every workout and don't wear it in the shower.  So, the sensors are clean and it has had minimal water exposure.  No noticeable events were associated with the change in behavior.

I fear that the problem is due to a hardware failure.  But, it would be great if it turns out that the software is just running amok and that a firmware update or special button-press sequence could resolve the problem.  I have very much enjoyed my Ionic and have greatly benefited from the "move your butt" reminders.  I'll be pretty sad if it can't be salvaged, especially after owning it for only 9 and a half months.

I forgot to add that the display is no longer coming on when I flip my wrist, even if I'm active and flip vigorously.

Have you tried a Factory Reset? If not give that a try (settings app on the Ionic and scroll down to About)

With the quick view, check that then you do a long press on the left button that the Screen wake is still set to Auto.

If the factory reset doesnt fix things once you set up again you will need to contact Support (link in my signature) before you waranty period runs out.

Thanks a lot, Nelly.  I tried the factory reset and made sure that the screen wake was set to "auto" without any success.  It sounds like my next step is to navigate Support.  Thanks again!
