I'm an Ionic newbie just started using it a week ago. I used a first generation Fitbit but haven't used one in a couple of years.
The sleep tracking had been looking pretty good to me until last night. It seems to have recorded my sleep start at 10:30pm, when in reality I was sitting up in bed reading until nearly midnight. Not only does the Fitbit think I was asleep, it claims I was in deep sleep when I was wide awake and reading.
I am thinking I should maybe do a manual sleep start when I actually put my book down and go to sleep, but the fact that it thought I was in deep sleep makes me doubt the accuracy of the sleep cycles altogether.
My Fitbit also stopped synching last night at 7:35pm, and this morning I had to plug it into the charger to get it to synch. Don't think that would be related but I am wondering maybe a software update that affected it?

@LRyan63 Welcome to the Fitbit forums! A new update was released a couple of days ago. I totally recommend updating your Ionic whenever is possible. Take a look at this post to check how and what the update includes.
Now, regarding sleep, as you were reading, it is possible that the watch thought you were asleep if you didn't moved that much for about an hour or so. As the help article here says: "If you’re not moving but not asleep for long periods of time it’s possible for your watch to falsely record sleep, in which case you can delete the sleep log from your history". Please check that article for more details. Please delete the erroneous sleep log.
Now, the deep sleep stage may have come from the heart rate reading you were having in that moment. Sleep stages are calculated using your heart rate.
Have you tried syncing again today? Remember to update your Ionic!
Keep me posted!
