Pause workouts

How long can a workout be paused?  I want to track my bike commutes and log  going to work and the ride home as one ride so I will need to pause and resume 8 hours later.  Can this be done?

Hi, @JohnM11, I haven't tried this, and admit that I am a little sceptical, but it would be great if you were willing to try and report back here so that others can benefit from your experience.

I think the GPS drains the battery even while paused, limiting the likelihood of this working out for you.  I tried this when I walked to a 2 hour orthodontist appointment.

I don't have one yet so I can't try.  I was hoping someone else knew and could answer before I buy one.

I will do this for science tonight before I head to bed. Will report in the morning.. assuming it doesn't die overnight due to a drained battery

The results are in.

Yes you can pause the workout for as long as the battery would allowPaused before going to bed last night

Battery at 94%, with GPS enabled and Always-on display disabled

 And...... 8 hours later 

Still able to resume ...

Battery now at 19% though..

Judging by the battery drain, it would appear @dermbrian is right about GPS continue running even when tracking is paused.  I don't suppose there is currently any workaround?
