Materials used + "aggressive sweat"

I am interested in a Fitbit Ionic and i was wondering how reiliant the "aerospace-grade 6000 series aluminum" is.

I am asking because I had a Microsoft Band 1 and had to send it in like 3-4 times due to the fact that my sweat seems to be very aggressive and it corroded the steel/aluminium on the backside and i was not able to charge it anymore (even though I regularly cleaned it).

Currently I have a Microsoft Band 2 and they used different materials (don't ask me which) but everything is fine here (except for the straps splitting every 10 month).

Anyhow I was wondering if anyone has experience on the topic. I would hate to buy an 359€ device and destroy it within month or having to send it in every x month...

My sweat has never corroded any of the trackers.

Interesting comment about the Microsoft band straps splitting every 10 months. I wish others would see that who complain that their Fitbit straps split. That's probably why Fitbit went to trackers with removable straps so they can be replaced.

Hi, googling Aluminium Series 6000 I could find out the 6xxx means it main alloy components are magnesium and silicon. Not sure if it helps but one step closer to find out if those elements are more sensible to sweat or not,

@Penecho, I assume by aggressive, you mean acidic? I think for the definitive answer on that, you'd be best off contacting Fitbit Support. They should know the answer to this, or be able to find out.

My sweat looks like it is changing the color of the aluminum case. I found your inquiry looking for anyone having the same issue.

Same is happening to mine too sadly 😞

I will try to put some Pictures in later this week. Looks a bit like "black spots" here. I had the exact same issue with my MS Band 1. On the Band 2 they wrote they used "medical grade Aluminium" what ever that means, but there was no error regarding this with it.

....by the way search under "discoloration".... more people have this issue out there. They are replacing mine so i will try using a scratch proof cover film that they use for the face on the underside... lets see if that is the solution.

After getting replacement within two weeks the metal turned white again. They recommend cleaning with alcohol which only highlights the discoloration. I decided to try a jewelry cloth, and guess what!, it took the discoloration away.

It's not discoleration in my case, it's material that is resolved… I took a quick Picture with my phone..

So, just wrote to the support here in Germany and I got the Response, that this is not covered by warranty… (my MS Band1 which had the same issue, was replaced two times without any Questions)

Seems this was my last Fitbit Tracker, if the materials are used can not withstand the pH Level of my sweat (like the MS Band 2 could)...
