I'm wondering if you will be able to control music playing on your phone (Spotify, Apple Music etc), from the Ionic?

From the website
Music control via Bluetooth Classic on Android and Windows devices. Music control via Bluetooth LE on iOS devices.
So it would seem so

i just tested out this feature. I am using the Pandora app on the watch and after a few tries I figured out how to access the controls and it works great. I then tried both Apple music and Pandora on the phone and it was also able to control music just like it did with my Surge.

Yes, you can do it now (hold upper right button or swipe from the top). It should work fairly seamlessly on iPhone, but on Android you need to go to Settings -> Bluetooth and pair with your phone. You will see Ionic (Classic) when pairing.
Once pairing is done, all playback controls enabled apps like Pandora, Apple Music, Audible, Google Play Music will work just fine. One little note: current production firmware has a bug which prevents artist info/track from being shown (displays "No artist info" instead). I'm running the beta firmware, and this issue has been resolved.

On iOS with beta firmware, when I play a song on my iPhone, the audio controls say no Audio Output. I am not running my headphones through the Fitbit though, if that affects it at all.

I was seeing that just now playing around with music controls for the first time. I went to music app in ionic, tapped the (...) at the top left corner, tapped device, switched the Source to "phone" and it was fine.

Did you try tapping "..." in upper left corner, then selecting Devices? You should see your phone as an option. On Android, when paired with Ionic (Classic), this would activate the watch connection to the phone and allow controls to work.

I clicked that and Phone is connected, but my media controls say Phone Not Connected. My phone Bluetooth says the Ionic is connected.

Success!! I unpaired the Ionic Bluetooth settings, restarted phone and Ionic, repaired it and now it works!!

Sadly, seems that the feature is indeed flaky. Worked for me yesterday upon firmware update. No longer works. Don't get artist info. But at least controls are functioning.

There needs to be an update for the Bluetooth connection on Android. Dual profiles is not happening. I've experienced nothing but hit or miss on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and it randomly decides when it wants to connect to either Iconic or Iconic (Classic) Bluetooth Profiles . Say that you DO manage to get the Iconic (Classic) Bluetooth profiles to work : you can play, pause, and skip (and sometimes this takes several presses to make it respond) yet the Volume Up and Down buttons do not control the volume on the phone during playback. You bought Pebble, and Pebble watches could do all of that out of the box. Having to do a workaround via Bluetooth settings and using Bluetooth Classic for Android users is not going to go over well with the average consumer. If this is not updated in software, my complaint will not be the only one heard. I love Fitbit and my Ionic and want it to succeed, but as a former Pebble owner, I expect those things to work the same.

Wow, took me AGES and ALOT of work to get this partially working. I did not even have access to change the music source on the Ionic - their tech support team and official FAQs were no help at all, their tech guys' answer was to do a factory reset... which I did, twice, slowly (over 4 hours, WTH?). Which did not help at all.
Figure out the solutions myself at the end. Had to download the PC software to manually transfer a music file across - which, activates the 3-dots settings screen within the music screen, allowing me to change the music source to Phone. After that it took me ages (and with the help of this thread) to figure out that I needed to create dual bluetooth profiles (again, WTH) in order to give the inwatch music app control of my device. Right now like you it's semi working on my end. I can control pause/play, skip forward/back, and volume control. The basics. Does not display content/artist/song names.
Really disappointing coming from an Android Wear 1.0 device, with which I was able to control my music and audiobooks and such with my voice for crying out loud. Could fast forward/rewind, access to features like thumbs up/down, playback speeds, cover arts, et cetera. Interface on Android Wear was a lot more intutitive and responsive too. Urrg.
