Nest App connection error

After see that the Nest App is now available I installed it, connected my Nest account and saw the current temperature. However, changing the temperature had no effect whatsoever.

Now almost everytime I launch the app on the Ionic I get the following message:

Bluetooth Error

Please check your connection

I seem to get this despite having "All day sync" enabled. I have also tried launching the Ionic app both before and after a sync, killing the phone app and restarting the Ionic all to no avail.

Is anyone else seeing this and does anyone know if the app requires the phone or does it communicate with the Nest API directly over Wi-Fi?

I don't have a nest, but I'm gonna take a guess that the watch app simply tells the phone app to do it's thing.

Therefore the phone needs to be nearby.  Perhaps you need Bluetooth classic paired up

It is a worthless app, but it clearly is not working as intended.

You do have to have your phone connected, in which case why not use your phone app?  Still, once connected it will not adjust Temps in any direction....... But having arrows gives the impression that you could adjust up and down.  The problem is, I get an error message saying, "cannot adjust while in eco mode, please adjust from your thermostat".  After turning off eco mode from my phone, I tried again, bit this time got, "cannot adjust whole in heat-cool mode, please adjust from your thermostat".

Worthless.

I've been playing with the app a little more over the holiday period and still can't get it communicate reliably - I've even had the Fitbit app on my phone indicate that it is connected with my Ionic when I have launched the Nest app yet it still displays connection error most of the time 😞

I think in the 40 to 50 times I have launched the app, it has connected to my phone 3 times and on each occasion I have been unable to alter the temperature on my Nest.
