I used to have regular issues with notifications, on and off all the time. Last week I changed my phone from HTC 10 to Xiaomi Mi 9T and I now get no notification at all - It's moved from bad to worse - I keep getting the same message asking to restart what leads to nothing. I've tried everything from restarting my fitbit to unpairing, re-installing app etc - nothing has fixed that issue.

I've found my own answer somehow on another thread:
Xiaomi MIUI has some pretty aggressive battery saving features. You'll need to do the following to get it to work
1. Disconnect your fitbit from your old phone first, otherwise you might experience connectivity problems
2. Connect to your fitbit using the app on your Xiaomi phone
3. On your Xiaomi phone, go to Settings -> Permissions -> Autostart find the fitbit app and make sure it's checked
4. On your Xiaomi phone, go to Settings -> Battery -> Manage Apps Battery Usage -> Choose Apps find the fitbit app and again, make sure that it is checked.
Both synchronising and notifications should work now, tested on my Xiaomi Mi Mix with MIUI 8.5.4.0

Step 4 worked for me. I'm using the MI9.
