Does the Fitbit Ionic have the ability to start and stop Runkeeper from the watch, and does provide give stats during the workout?
I have used a Pebble Time smartwatch with Runkeeper for a while now and am considering replacing it with possibly an Ionic, but I want to make sure it meets my needs. I'm after a good solution that has the price point, battery life and functionality of the Pebble Time.
Will the Ionic do, or any other recommendations?

No it cant not stop Runkeeper from the device it self. Needs to be done through the app.
But the Ionic has its own GPS and this can be started and stopped on the device itself

Thanks for the response. That's a shame.
One of the great things about the Pebble watch is that I can start, stop and pause Runkeeper without getting my phone out. Also, using the phone GPS is preferable for me as it saves on draining the watch battery (and hence shortening the battery life). I also don't want the hassle of tracking activities with Fitbit and having to sync them to Runkeeper through some other syncing process.
I was really hoping that when Fitbit acquired Pebble, the functionality and capabilities of the Pebble watches would live on. Right now it looks like the Ionic doesn't compare with the Pebble watches on battery life, price or functionality...
Guess I'm taking my dollars elsewhere... 😞
