I have noticed that my fit bit records a third more steps than my phone app. Today 9000 steps on fit bit versus 6000 on phone. Why is this?

That's probably because the Fitbit is a wrist-worn device whereas your phone is more stationary and more likely in your pocket. One of the faults of wrist-worn trackers is that they will often count arm movements as steps.
