Switching between apps

I was wondering if there is a way to switch between active apps on the Ionic.  When I have the Exercise app open, I wanted to be able to switch back to the Timers app so I can accurately time my breaks between sets.  For some reason when the Exercise app is open it won't let me (or I am doing it incorrectly) make the switch.  Any tips?  Thanks -

No general purpose app switching, like on your mobile phone or more capable smartwatches.
