So what'll happen is this;
I'll go to the gym, start my workout on the elliptical machine.  I'll set the workout to start on my Ionic and it starts off fine.  Then halfway through my workout I'll look at the Ionic to see some stats and I see that I'm back to the main screen so at some point the workout just phantom stopped.

What's happening is that this thing sometimes screws up on capturing heartbeat data.  If it suddenly drops to 0 for a little bit the workout just ends.  The Charge 2 didn't do this so why does the Ionic stop?  Can we get an option to have workouts continue without stopping in this manner?  It's very counter-intuitive being that this is a FITBIT watch which is used for EXERCISING!

Im sorry @Raverrevolution but a question like this is beyond the abiltyabof the comunity of Fitbit users to answer.

Maybe someone will add their experience. The only thing iIcan think of, is that the ionic is getting caught in a long sleeve .

I did some tests and I was wrong.  You can run a workout without it detecting a heartbeat, but I have the same issue as others with workouts randomly stopping for no reason.
