reading the clock while in an app

OK, so I am playing tennis or maybe pickleball (using the same app) and someone has the audacity to ask me what time it is? I can't go back to the time without ending the exercise app by hitting the checked flag???

If it's the exercise app on the Ionic, a few clicks of the side button until you see the time.
