**Update -I finally called customer support and wanted to share in case it helps others. Apparently with the Luxe you have to start your exercise using the Luxe directly vs starting it in the app. I tried it and it did work. Bummer since the app is more user friendly, but glad to have a solution!
Fitbit Luxe -only tracks the mapping when I have the app open on my phone. All my settings are correct and everything is updated. I don't know if the stats I am receiving are accurate when it is closed, but you can see the map goes off course when the app is closed. Thoughts?
To clarify, the phone is in my hand and the app is open in the background, but perhaps I answer a text, etc. This was never a problem -at least not with the other Fitbits I have owned (previous was the Alta HR.

Hi, @jonesml , in order for GPS to stay connected to your phone, you should not necessarily need to have the Fitbit app open, however you do need to have permissions set so that the app can run in the background. This is true whether you are using Android or iOS and needs to be done in the settings menu on your phone, not in the Fitbit app.
Instructions for enabling the Android app to run in the background can be found here .
On the iPhone you will need to enable background app refresh. You will find this in your phone’s settings —> general —> background app refresh —> Fitbit app, then make sure it is set to on (green)

Yes, I have already checked that and the settings are as you recommended. Additionally, location is set to always, Bluetooth on, and it is set for cellular data. The app and phone are fully updated, as well, but the issue persists.
