Yes, quite a few people are eating a plant-based diet. You can search past discussions as explained in this other post. Hopefully some people will chime in here too.
Any sustainable way of eating that puts you in a caloric deficit will result in weight loss. That applies to plant-based eating too. Even if/when weight loss isn’t the goal, there are proven health benefits in eating a plant-based diet.
