Calories lost before I wake up

Hi Everyone,

I have noticed that I seem burn a fair few caolories even before I get out of bed....I promise im sleeping!! haha

I know that we burn calories even when stationary but i seem to be loosing way more than I should.

Does anyone else have this issue? it can be quite misleading.

Thanks

Lindsey

It's hard to judge with no idea how many calories you are talking about.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

It can be up to 600!

That could well be your BMR (basal metabolic rate) calories that you burn just by being alive.  I think you are just under-estimating them.  They typically make up over half the calories you burn in a day.  If you have trouble believing that, Google "BMR calculator" and see what results any of them give.

Also see How does my Fitbit device calculate calories burned?

@MrsIrish  Your body uses calories to maintain your healthy body temperature.  More calories are needed if it is cold around you than hot.  🙂

Curious what the "should" amount of calorie burn is - and where you got the estimate to compare to?

You get enough details for any confirmation or help.

Didn't mention when you got up to see this figure of 600.

4 am? Ya, there's probably something wrong with your settings.

Noon? Could actually be low.

Body stats since BMR rate of burn is used. Or find a Mifflin St Jeor BMR calculator and see what yours is - Fitbit is using something similar to estimate calorie burn.

Because it's not measuring it, it's estimating the burn rate.

@MrsIrish  Your body uses almost as many calories when you are sitting on the couch all day as when you exercise.   When I was in great pain with shingles I didn't exercise and I used almost the same number of calories.  People who go for a walk and think they can eat more because they used X number of calories during the walk are making a big mistake.  They didn't use many extra.    Taking a step or 2 doesn't compare with making blood and transporting all around inside you and keeping your heart chugging along all the time.

Take your BMR and divide it by 24. That's about how much your body will burn per hour. If you wake up at 6, take that hourly rate and multiply it by 6 hours, and that should be what your calories burned total from midnight to waking (adjust as needed for the time you actually wake up).
