I use a heart rate monitor. In the past I used a garmin/watch combo and manually updated on the website. Recently, I bought a bluetooth version (Wahoo Blue) that uploads heart rate and calories burned to my iPhone - the app automatically uploads the data to my fitbit dashboard.
