I have been on my weight loss journey this round since January 6th, and I have lost just over 60lbs. I used all the advice and charts for a 6'2'' male at age 31 to set a goal weight. I get anywhere from 170-200 or there abouts as a healthy weight. So I set my goal in the middle of that at 185.
Here is the Rub, I went in for my physical and my doctor told me to have an end weight at 225...I was baffled to say the least. He said he wouldn't ever talk to me about loosing weight and even called me big boned as if it wasn't an excuse to be larger. Anyone else experience something like this? I am at a loss for where my goal should be now, I want to trust him, but I also want to be sure I am in a healthy range.

Hi Stegmanco,
I think 185 as a goal weight for a guy who is 6'2". I know several guys who are fit and in good shape who are in that weight range. It does depend on your build but 225 seems a little high, unless you are a pro football player and heavily muscled. Ultimately, your goal weight should be a weight that you are very comfortable with and feel healthy and energetic at. Also, it should be a weight that you can maintain. Best of luck!

If you doctor isn't serious about you losing weight, it may be time to find a new doctor. It's one thing to have different end goals, but it is another for your doctor to just not want to talk to you about weight loss. If you feel he isn't giving you what you need, shop around.

Depends on your physical fitness via Fat Mass. If you have a smart scale at home, find out what your weight and Fat Mass is at current.
186 is the butter zone for normal weight, but you also want to reach a Lower Body Fat. The most you want to shoot for is the Fitness Zone. Most will want the goal of Athletes.
Description Women Men
Essential fat | 10–13% | 2–5% |
Athletes | 14–20% | 6–13% |
Fitness | 21–24% | 14–17% |
Average | 25–31% | 18–24% |
Obese | 32%+ | 25%+ |

I agree with jwishart86 Get a new doctor. Im 58 years old 5'8" and started my weight jurney in jan. I started at 235 lbs and weighed in at 197 this morning. My new doctor told me to keep doing what ever I am doing and took me off one of my blood pressure meds. how cool is that.
P.S. stay away from the pre processed foods, makes loosing weight a lot easear.

As a healthcare professional [RN] I, too, am baffled by your physician's response. You goal weight should be based on your body type [athletic, muscular, etc] and lean body mass. Also, you should find a weight you feel good/healthy at and can realistically maintain. Get another doc! You are the customer!

For 6'2" 225 is the border between Obese and merely Overweight. (I am the same height so I know this number well.)
That is my personal Grail weight. (It is about 60 pounds below where I am now.)
When I get there, I will re-consider my goals, I was down to 260 last summer and couldn't believe how much better I felt. (I started at 336 the December before, but have had a major backslide to 295 until I started pushing back last month.)
I personally cannot see myself below 200#. We will see about that later. Right now I have little goals (5 more pounds by 4/July).
I have no idea where you are now, but take the little goal, and then reevaluate. "How do you feel about your weight?"

I would ask him why he thinks borderline 'obese' BMI is right for you.

I am actually doing well, I started at 365 on January 1st and I am down to 305. I am large all over, most of my friends had me pegged at 280-300 when I weighed 365. I wear my weight from head to tow and I have a large frame. I am not worried about my pace of weight loss per se, except this summer BBQ and Beer should probably slow down. I don't cut anything out and try to just keep to my calorie goal each day, and make sure I get in 12,000 steps. It's getting harder now tho, as I still want 3,200 calories and I should be taking in 2800 now.
I have weighted 280+ since I was 16 so I have no idea what a reasonable goal weight would look or feel like. I know that I do have more energy to play and roll around on the floor with my kids, and assume that will only get better the more I loose.
I think I will talk to my doctor again when I go to my physical next year, as my blood test numbers are good and really I am still making progress with eat and drink anything, but burn the calories off plus a deficit of 500-1000 a day.
After everyones posts, I didn't change my goal, it is still 185...but that 225 is going to make me feel a lot better when I hit it as a doctor approved goal wieght, even if this guy sounds off.

There is a reasonable amount of evidence that people have difficulty stabilizing at weights below their lowest adult weight. Additionally, there may be more health risks in weight instability than obesity. You should talk to your Dr, but I'm guessing that is where this is coming from. You might agree to a plan where you stabilize at 250 for a while, then lose more. i know that for specific health reasons, last year my dr wanted me to ignore my weight and fat % for a while and focus entirely on muscle growth. So thin = healthy is an oversimplification that may not apply to you.
