Fasting Self-Experimentation

So I've been posting in the intermittent fasting thread, but thought I'd start a new thread on my self-experimentation while multi-day fasting.  I purchased a blood testing meter that tests for both ketones and blood glucose levels.  This is much more accurate testing on blood rather than urnine as level of water consumption among other things can give false positive and negative reading or influence them.

I started my mutli-day fast with the ending of my meal last Wednesday evening (2FEB16).  I recieved my meter Thursday and did my first ketone test Thursday eveninng at 9:30 pm and recorded a level of 1.9 which is within the optimal fat burning mode of 1.6 to 3.0.

Before going to bed, I had two drinks with vodka and Fresca, believing that as alcohol isn't processed the same, it wouldn't affect my blood glucose levels and thus no ketone level impact.  I found I was dead wrong and the next morning, my ketone test showed 0.7 or essentially no fat burning.  By that evening ketones had risen back to 2.6.

No alcohol Friday night and Saturday mornings reading was up again to 3.6 - a little on the high side, but a ketone test with the urine test only showed moderate levels being expelled.  The difference being consumed for energy.  For Saturday evening through today, my levels have been more consistent between 2.2 and 2.8.  Sunday night I recieved my glucose test strips and began mointoring blood glucose.  One of the concerns of fasting in general is the lack of glucose to feed red blood cells and specific brain cells.  Normal adult fasting levels of glucose (in this case fasting meaning 12 hours after a meal like doctors make you do before blood tests) is 70-100.  Sunday night I tested at 72.  Monday's two test came in at 94 and 75.  This mornings test was at 75 as well, so my glucose is in the normal range giving sufficent fuel for those cells that can only use glucose.

When I started fasting, my resting heart rate was around 62 bpm.  As I've gone through the fast period, it has declined steadily and todays is at 57.  I have continued to walk and do light to moderate exercise while fasting and exceeding the step goal of 10k per day.

So based on my research into fasting and IF, my self-experimentation in as far as I can test, bears out the results.  BTW, as I get back in shape I was only up to about 10 pushups without stopping, but yesterday I was able to do 20 after a previous set of 10, so no loss in strength.  I have no real hunger.  I do have dry mouth alot, but the thought hit me yesterday that siliva is secreated as part of the digestive process.  I've been drinking around 80 oz of water a day, so the dry mouth must be contributed to having nothing to digest, so thus no siliva.  I tested that by getting some sugar free altoids mini's and sucking on one every so often and at 1 or 2 an hour, the dry mouth disappeared.  My glucose test shows no significant increase in blood glucose as a result of the sugar free mints.

I will continue to post the results of my fasting here.  This will extend into IF when I break this fast and return to every other day fasting.  I'm super curious how my body will respond to ADF and if I've effective trained my body to switch back and forth between the two.  UCLA's Longevity Institute has found that periodic fasting (defined as 3-4, 5 day fasts per year) has a significant impact on disease such as alzhiemer and Parkinsons.  They have developed a fast mimicking diet that uses high fat and 800 calories per day that give the same results.   I intend on conducting a pure water, coffee, tea, bone broth fast every quarter in addition to my ADF.

Stay tuned!

I just took another set of readings.  I was holding off as I only had 2 ketone test strips left with more on order.  I checked the tracking and they have been delivered to my hotel, so I went ahead and took both blood ketone and blood glucose levels.  ketone level has jumped to 6.6 and glucose is down to 59.  6.6 is quite high so I went in to examine when I should be concerned.  As long as i stay below 7 I am good.  Glucose is a little low as well.  I'll take another reading tonight on both and if still out, I may try to eat just a little something to adjust it gently. In about 15 minutes, I'll be taking a walk which may help 'burn up' some of the ketones.

I noticed this morning that some of the areas on my body that contained the most subcutanious fat are very 'floppy' and loose, so I know the fat is getting oxidized.  It's not always easy to remember that there is a lot more fat on us than just under the skin.  Visiceral fat doesn't show as much, but is far more dangerous than subcutanious fat.  I'm happy to get rid of that first.  My pants and belt are looser today.  I actually need to put another hole in my belt, but the tail is so long now, I just need to buy another belt.

So I'm not overly concerned at my readings, but I will montior both them and how I feel.

Yesterday, my ketone level was quite high at 6.6.  I tested again in the evening and it had come down to 4.4, so the walking may have helped with that.  I just tested again at 9 am and ketones are at 3.0 (perfect) but glucose is a touch low at 63.  Still no reason for great concern.

I felt a little hunger this morning when I first woke up, but ok now.  I got 8 hours of sleep last night, but a bit fitful as I woke a couple of times at 11:30 and 2:30.  This is half way through day 7.  I did have bone broth last night, but finished off what I had made, so no more until I get back home.

Still not decided on when I'll break the fast.  Just taking it day by day and trying listen to my body.  Since I did have that bit of alcohol at the end of day 1 that knocked me out of ketosis, I would like to make it through day 8 so I'm sure to have 7 full days of fasting effect.  I'm also considering with what foods I'll break the fast with.  As most of you know, I am practicing LCHF diet which eating should put me in/keep me in ketosis.  I'm also speculating that going without food for this long is going to 'mess with my gut flora'.  I make my own Curdito, which is a lacto fermented saurkraut of sorts that originated in El Salvador.  I also have some probiotic's at home, so I thought I'd start with the probiotics, some Curdito and Keifer to re-populate the gut before I go with anything too hardcore.  There is a lot of talk that IF helps gut flora, but not much on longer term fasting.

In my previous post, I didn't mention that my head was feeling very foggy in a plesant, but still concerning as well.  I went for a walk at lunch and physcially I felt fine.  Legs were strong, diidn't feel tired or anything like that.  At first I didn't think it helped (the walk), but by this writing, the fog has cleared and I feel pretty good.  Must have been just and adjustment I was going through.

So just a quick update for anyone who may be following.  Just took my evening test and my ketones are at 4.8 and blood glucose is at 57.  Glucose is still low and I wish it could be up around 70.  I considered getting something to just tweak those glucose levels, but truth is, anything I'd get would be junk as I'm still in a hotel.  I'll be home tomorrow night, so if I still have low glucose, I'll eat a little protein to tweak them up just a touch without putting me out of ketosis.  Actually, as I write this it suddenly hits me I have some small half and half creamers in the room.  I'll take just one to try and get the glucose back into the 70's.  See if this helps on tomorrows reading.

I'd like to take even more readings to see what happens with each thing I consume, but they are just too expensive for that.

Stay tuned.

Just a quick update.  Tested glucose this morning.  I drank one of those single serve half and half for coffee last night and had one in my coffee this morning.  This seemed to have a slight impact on my glucose as I just tested it at 70, so I'm back up in the normal range.  Yeaaa!

I broke my fast today.  I started with some curdito, then some guac.  I weight before and after eating and my net wet loss was 7 lbs.  I'm at 183.  I've also been testing my ketones and glucose.  I'm at 85 on glucose and 1.0 on ketones, so I'm still in mild ketosis and glucose is within normal range.  I'll eat today, fast tomorrow as I resume my alternate day fasting routine and continue to monitor my blood.

So after eating yesterday, I am fasting again today.  I just took my readings and my blood glucose is 76 and ketones are 2.1.  I'm quickly back into fat burning mode after just a few hours.  My diet is low carb high fat which can keep me in ketosis even during feeding, but on feeding days I did have some wine with my dinner.

After the curdito and guacamole on pork rinds, I also ate a 10 oz New York Strip, grassfed steak for dinner with two glasses of Malbec.  I had some toast with butter and peanut butter after dinner.  Tomorrow is Sunday and I'm looking at getting up and having a really nice breakfast with eggs and sausage.  May even make that an omlet, mmmm, yea that's the ticket!

The title of this topic is "fasting", but it’s really about the ketogenic diet (extremely low level of carbohydrates allowed), fasting being only the way the diet is implemented.

One certainly needs to be very motivated to do a ketogenic diet. This is even more true in your case, as my understanding is you’re spending a lot of time on the road for work.

I’m just wondering how people can adhere to a ketogenic diet for longer periods of time, even if calories are not restricted. It just sounds so unpractical, and incompatible with any form of social/family life.

I have been searching some post and enjoy reading them about others and how they diet and experiment to learn about their bodies. However one thing I noticed is how you always pop up to discourage or talk down their way of dieting or lifestyle change. As I practioner of IF and fasting I will answer the question you always ask about family and social interactions. Apparently all your social/family interaction are associated with eating, which in my opinion is whats went wrong with society, everyone thinks to get together is to eat or drink. Anyway back on topic, to answer your question in one word, DISCIPLINE that is how you maintain IF or Fasting or low carb, DISCIPLINE my friend... If I'm fasting and go to a social function I just chose to socialize and not eat simple as that its mind or matter..

Now that your question is answered you can continue reading others post about fasting/IF and encourage them instead of asking that same question or making the same statement.. Cheers!

Although I haven't been doing the Keto diet for very long I am not finding it that difficult to do. After a week to a week and 1/2 the cravings subside. Do I ocasionally crave some bread or sweets? Sure I do, but no more or less than anyone eating a "normal" north american diet would. I actually find that if I do indulge in a bit of sweets a bite it ussually enough. I generally find it too sweet and I don't want more than about a mouth full anyway.

I am not a highly motivated person in general, I can be stubborn but not extremely modivated and I am not finding it all that hard. I don't know how long I will keep this up but right now I plan on keeping it going through the summer at least. My motivation for doing this is to see how it affects my endurance for long period exertions off over 3 hours at tempo pace, long after carbs would be depleated.

It's no worse than someone being vegiterian or vegan. Granted most "pub grub" is carb heavy but if you pick your restaurants a little more carefully most will be accomodating. Just ask for veggies instead of potatoes, pick something that isn't breaded, don't bother with a desert.

I'm with you, I do not thinking its that hard to maintain IF or low carb. I have even employed low carb and IF together from time to time depending on what i needed from my body. Theres nothing wrong with fixing a sweet tooth from time to time either your not going to tears down all your efforts.. The problem with sweets is you have to be disciplined enough to stop thats where most people lose it.. The other morning I was fixing my daughter a bowl of apple jacks they choose to have cereal on Saturdays. As I was looking at that cereal I really wanted a few bites so i got a few pieces and ate them and it was plenty to satisfy that craving, no harm no foul.
