There are lots of different approaches to fasting.

essentially fasting is eating nothing. We do that naturally when we sleep (hence breakfast).

Usually it involves limiting the eating window to a few hours in the day (only morning or only evening) or eating nothing for 24 or 36 hours.

still requires drinking plenty of water.

It can serve a purpose (balancing the books after a cheat day for example) but it’s not easy and shouldn’t be done lightly. Check with your doctor first.

This is a bad idea. Fasting requires medical supervision.

You opened another topic asking how to lose weight faster and in this it was already determined you do not eat enough, and you want to eat even less ?

Losing weight is a very long term process and needs to be done slowly, otherwise you will harm yourself.

It seems you have a hard time doing it and are pushing yourself in unhealthy direction. Same with sports I saw a thread where you mention pushing yourself to pain. GO SEE A HEALTH CARE SPECIALIST.

@RockinRach losing a significant amount of weight and keeping if off long-term involves major lifestyle changes. You seem to be looking for a quick fix, but that is how yo-yo dieting happens. You lose weight fast and regain it even faster. I really think that, rather than over-exercising and googling different fad diets, you should talk to a dietician and let them help you develop a healthy, safe weight-loss plan.

Hi! I have done the intermittent fasting for 9 months last year while I did the Keto diet. At first it seemed very hard as I suffer from being HUNGRY all the time. I can eat 2000 calories and be hungry within an hour. My hunger hormone is out of wack. I found the intermittent fasting REALLY HELPED this little monster hormone and within a week I wasn't thinking about food hardly at all. I didn't suffer from obsessing about the next meal. I knew my "window" and I pre-prepped my meals for those windows so there wasn't any big surprises and I was always ready within the window. I'm not sure what exactly you're wanting to do the fasting for or what specifics your life looks like. I do recommend always checking with your doctor to make sure it won't interfere with your current health, but my doctor okayed me and was very happy when I reported the lack of constant hunger pains after the week. I went with a short 6 hour window where I ate 2 meals. I was not exercising at the time, so I made both of my meals about 600 calories - one at 12pm and one at 5pm so I'd be finished before 6pm. I drank LOTS of water all day long though. Which is important. If you're going to workout while doing the intermittent fasting I would have chosen to do it after my first meal and before my second --- only because I wouldn't want that hunger hormone killing me from lack of food.... but that may be a mind trick? ha. Anyways --- hope this helped a bit. Feel free to message me or friend me if you have other questions or curiosities.  FYI i do plan on intermittent fasting again when I am not breast feeding and I do not plan on ever doing KETO again because I had my gallbladder removed at age 16 and that diet seemed to not jive well with my digestive system. That's just me personally. I lost weight while on it and felt full and didn't struggle with food addiction while on it - in fact I almost dreaded eating without the carbs and sugar to make it fun it was a drag. Ha. I like the more balanced Paleo approach or more vegan approach with lean meats added in ---- so low carb, low sugar - or none if you can hack it - and lean meats and TONS of veggies and a bit of fruit. I also hated on keto not being able to have my apple or banana or berries. I'd be curious to hear what you've tried in the past. The thread below seems to be a bit harsh, but again, I didn't do any footwork on your past posts. I just wanted to encourage you on your journey --- we all feel better when we are healthy and if that is your goal - I'd love to help in any way I can. I have made many mistakes over the years and I haven't become a "SUCESS StORY" by any means yet, but I have lost 100lbs in 1 year and 40lbs in 6 months and etc and etc throughout the years.... and I've gained it back because I made poor decisions too. So this is a super long post, but I hope you hear these things:

1. Consult your doctor before doing anything drastic.

2. There are different reasons to try different diets or fasting and all come with a bit of different results for different reasons.

3. There are lots of us on the path seeking a better and healthier life and we want to help others achieve their goals too.

4. I would love to support you on your journey and I'd love a fellow fitbitter cheering me on too and sharing what they learn along the way too.

Take care of yourself and most of all don't forget ---- empty calories are the pits --- DO NOT DRINK YOUR CALORIES - Water is the only way. 😃

I did my intermittent fasting with a 18 hour no eat window and a 6 hour eating window. I chose my eating window to be from 12 to 6. So I had lunch and dinner. It was easier for me to skip breakfast. I know lots of people that like to do 9am to 3pm and they do a brunch and last meal at 3. So it's really up to what you think mentally and realistically you can do. If you wake up STARVING --- then maybe the 9am-3pm works best for you.... if you typically get STARVING at night --- then you will probably like the 12 to 6pm I was doing. You can start with a bigger window too if it's too hard at first and then narrow from there.

Medications and I do not get along --- so I hear you on the side affects. Try to drink tons of water throughout the day and that should help. I try to drink half my body weight in ozs ---- so I am 300lbs --- so I drink 150ozs of a water a day ---- that seems like SOOOO much if you aren't used to drinking water, but when you get there it helps everything --- skin, teeth/breath, energy, brain awakeness, staves off hunger a bit --- so ya --- but I think the only way you can get that much water is to get a huge bottle and keep it with you all the time and to log it - and to not drink any other drinks.

I fast 16 hours.  I stop consuming food at 8pm and do not eat again until 12pm or so.  It does get easier.  I try not to eat anything with sugar and have given up all grains.  I am weight loss resistant at 70yo.  Been fat since age 11.  The usual yoyo.  The standard american diet pyramid is wrong.  It should be turned upside down.  I have lost 16lbs in three months which is amazing.  Some days I am hungry, but most I am not anymore.  I used to ALWAYS be hungry, even after eating.  The first week or so of the fast was really hard.  I would look at the clock to see when I could eat.  There is lots of info on Youtube about fasting.  Some people are nuts in my opinion but there is a Dr. Eric Berg who is very interesting.  Good luck.

Fasting can address health concerns including weight. I've been using an intermittent fasting method for a few years now.  I've made some errors on how I manage this but I do recommend reading and connecting with others for good information. And take small steps such as eliminating snacks and sugared drinks.   My nutritionist at the clinic is not in favor of fasting but my doctor is.  I have read Dr. Jason Fung's Obesity Code and Diabetes Code as well as other publications.  I am losing weight using a low carb approach.  But the biggest benefit is that I feel better, have more energy and food has less control of me.  Because I also have diabetes, I monitor blood glucose and keep regular appointments always.

Regarding snacks, it is generally recommended to avoid snacking during the fasting period to allow your body to fully enter a fasted state. However, if needed, you can have a small snack within your eating window. For instance, if you start your eating window at 11 am and finish at 7 pm, you can have a snack between lunch and dinner, around 3 or 4 pm. It's essential to maintain portion control and choose healthy, nutrient-dense option during your eating window.
