Try not stepping on the scale every day (unless wanting to), 'cause of natural fluctuations (water upkeep (warm weather and not drinking water frequently, your body will hold onto any water or when having eaten to much salt), food remnants from previous day(s) left inside your body *some foods can take up to 36+ hours to fully digest*, slowly it's possible to gain weight in muscle mass (or loose weight (from muscle mass) when being inactive for longer periods), there can be dehydration.. influencing the number on the scale.
It's the trend that matters over time, don't let a number determine your mood for the day or influence food choices (when knowing doing everything right, don't give up), when the number (body fat %) is a bit higher than usual, it can be of dehydration or other natural fluctuations.
Feel free to check out https://trendweight.com/ , it's possible to retrieve your weight measurement from your fitbit account and see a trend between the measurements, rather than focusing on the daily numbers alone.
Your actual weight / body fat % is a estimation only and can't reflect your real weight / body % for 100% accurately*, it's about making changes, feeling your clothes getting looser, seeing weight going down or staying about the same, to make changes where desired (food habits, exercise).. see how you feel, are you getting fitter, can do the same exercise but more easily?
* Our weight would be alot different (lots lots lower almost weighing nothing on one planet, on another we'd be weight tons (or a few pound more).. all due gravity (& the size of the planet also determines how strong the gravity is..) feel free to check out the website: http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/

Mostly it's an estimated guesser from the sensors built in that scan your feet for how much water weight you have. But as you shred extra and consume correct kinds of foods, the fat percentage will drop. If you're consuming bad foods like McDonald's or a few other kinds of bad foods, the fat percentage will rise.
You should eat Foods that build Lean Muscle which drops fat percentage. But in moderation as too many can increase your natural weight.
Also be sure you're looking into physical fitness programs. Most you can do for free without signing a contract. Bodybuilding.com is one. Nike on your phone is another. And a couple other wide range free programs on the xbox one for example.

Don't trust the fat % on the scale - it is not an accurate method of measuring body fat %. I believe the most accurate methods are water displacement and X-ray but those are usually costly. There are some pictures of "examples" of ranges, if you wanted to compare yourself, but it isn't anything you should or could track regularly. Bottom line is, how do you feel about yourself? Other than that, a body fat % is only important to professional bodybuilders.

I find my scale registers a higher body fat percentage when I have just had a shower and my feet have absorbed water by standing in an inch or two for a little while. Shouldn't it register as more water rather than more fat?

The Aria Scale works on whats called Bio Impedance Analysis
Body Fat, Water and Lean Mass all conduct electricity differently.
By weighing you, asking your height, shocking you with various electrcial strengths and frequencies, it estimates your bodyfat.
Its not wildly accurate, although its fairly consistant.
It is very sensitive to water as well.
It may be that you are losing muscle faster than you are losing fat.
What sort of diet and excercise are you doing? What are your BF% readings? How tall and heavy are you?
