Like 2 1/2 years ago, I was at 194 and then I got as low as 171.5. I had hernia surgery and time passed and I'm 188.2. My waist when I started was a 34 and I got down to a 30. After going back up to 188 - I still can fit into the size 30. Weird.

Hi @mabates71. Welcome to the community.
Have you been lifting weights over the past 2 years? If the the extra weight is muscle, it won't show up in the waist.
I've definitely gone through some of that 'up and down' with my weight over the years. One thing I noticed is that the waist measure on pants and shorts is usually incorrect, actual is usually more than what it says, it can vary by several inches from season to season from a given manufacture, and varies between manufactures.
Weekly measurement of my waist with one of these waist measuring tapes, along with daily weigh-ins on the scale (so I can track weekly averages), gives me a much more reliable picture of how my body is changing.

So what is the exact issue at hand? Is it the weight rebound (not uncommon)? Or that 16 pounds are somehow unaccounted for and you don’t know where they got hidden?
I agree with @Baltoscott that a tape measure is a better way (than the clothes you’re wearing) to determine changes in body measurements such as your waist circumference.
The good thing in having reached a low point such as 171 in your case is that if you were able to do it once, you can do it a second time, learning from your past experience to avoid rebounding.

the same size 30 that you wore when you lost weight or new ones? because vanity sizes are huge right now especially with lycra. so it isn't really a 30. I would do what the gents suggested as far as measuring your waist. As far as weight loss, congrats on doing once and cheers to your next success.

Yup, I'm in the same size 30 Mens pants that I was in at 171.5 lbs and I was 188 recently. My hernia surgery and recovery triggered my weight gain. But I think it will be easier to bounce back but will take time. Yesterday I dropped like .7 pounds.

I understand losing the weight and then gaining it back. I went from 321 to 110 lbs. Now I am at 155 lbs. I had two toes fractured and for about a year I wasn't exercising. I feel deeply discouraged. What are you doing to beat the battle of the bulge? I need HELP!

Thank you for sharing your experience with this @mabates71.
I experienced something similar a few months ago when I found I'd gained some of the weight I worked so had to loose in the previous year 😰, but I did end up realizing it was actually muscle mass. 😎
As @Baltoscott mentioned earlier, weekly measurements of your waist and daily weigh-ins on the scale are really helpful to keep track of your weight and avoid those jump scares.
