I see some people posting some extremely unhealthy and dangerous eating and activity (or lack thereof) tips on these boards. Please folks, 99% of the people here, no matter how well meaning, are NOT health professionals.
Always fact check before taking some crazy advice. Some dangerous advice I've seen just recently is that it's okay to only eat once a day, only consume 900 calories a day and/or engage in NO activity whatsoever. I just can't believe some of the potentially hazardous advice I'm reading here.
Don't put your health at risk over some knucklehead you don't know. Not everything you read on the interwebs is true!

I agree, speak to the professional that knows you the best, your primary care physician. Yes, a body will lose weight with a diet, but no you will not lose fat first, you will lose muscle first unless you use aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes. I just posted a research article from the The University of Michigan that backs me up. All the best to you too. Charlie

@I-train-hard- I think saying always is too general. It is a combination of both- if you want to avoid losing muscle then there are things you need to do. But its not all muscle. Fat goes too. Which goes first, in what proportion, we can debate for days which would be exhausting. Best, E.

Yes, Super Size Me was pretty interesting. I can't believe how poor has health had become after just one month. After watching that a couple years ago I cut out fast foods altogether. Now, not only do I not crave it, but when I think about a McD's, or Burger King, or whatever, it makes me a little squeamish.
@Corney wrote:Trooper, I would advise you to see the movie Super Size Me, you might find in you Library on CD. That movie would change you point of view on food intake. The guy who eats a Big Mac, fries and a coke everyday may seem in perfect health, but have you seen his blood work, levels of LDL, HDL, Tryglicerides, Blood sugar. How old is he, is he over weight? What do you mean no Cholesterol, we all have Cholesterol, without Cholesterol all our cells would fall apart, because Cholesterol makes up the cell membrane. He may seem healthy now but what will his life be like in 10-20 years?

There's weight loss and then there's fat loss. My research has shown me that with dieting alone and no weight or body weight training, aprox. 30% of the weight you lose is muscle. So for every 10 lbs you lose, supposedly 3 lbs of it is muscle when you don't include strength training.
I've started including dumbbell and resistance bands traing to avoid this.

Keep in mind that this guy did this (and other movies) for shock value. He is at best a political activist who starts with a bad premise then fights to prove it. In the movie about 1/2 way into it he was feeling bad, still stufed his face with bad food. He had to battle to force food into his system when he was not hungry. It was not about a few, or even a LOT of bad eating. It was about forcing himself to get sick.

@Corney wrote:It seems most of what I read concerns weight loss, and unhealthy means to achieve it. The ketogenic diet is simply the Atkins diet taken to extremes, remember he died of a Brain hemorrage when he fainted. This diet does not provide enough carbohydrates to caary glucose to the bodies cells, especially the Brain which functions best on glucose derived from carbohydrates. Without carbohydrates the body forms ketones from the metabolism of fatty acids which increases the bodies acidity which leads to metabolic acidosis, low blood phosphate levels, lowered brain function, increased incidence of osteoporosis and kidney stones, head aches, halitosis, constipation/diarrhea, weakness, skin rashes and insomnia. People can't stay on this diet for very long due to all its adverse effects. When people bought the FITbit, I assumed they wanted to get FIT, which means changing behaviors, eating a healthy diet, decreasing empty calories, and starting a sensible exercise program. Does the fitbit advocate any of these ridiculous fad diets like IF and the Ketogenic diet? I think not. Aerobic exercise done for at least 20 minutes in your aerobic zone, burns fat, lowers LDL, raises HDL, lowers levels of triglycerides all essential to heart health. Please, before starting on and of these fad diets, talk to your Doctor, and remember the name of what you are wearing on your wrist, FITBIT, with emphasis on Fitness!
Not that I'm a fan of low carb over the long haul for myself, but just to set the record straight - Dr. Atkins slipped on a patch of ice, hitting his head. He did not faint.
And before anyone else brings it up, he weighed 195 pounds when he entered the hospital after the injury, then gained 63 pounds due to fluid retention during his stay (brain trauma will do that) to make his final weight of 258 pounds. So he was not 258 pounds when he went in, he did not pass out, and he died of "Blunt impact injury of head withepidural hematom" per the coronor's report.
Also, eating a lower level of carbohydrates does not lead to "metabolic acidosis, low blood phosphate levels, lowered brain function, increased incidence of osteoporosis and kidney stones, head aches, halitosis, constipation/diarrhea, weakness, skin rashes and insomnia." I have done it. And it just plain doesn't. You might have a couple of these symptoms for a week or so, but then they're gone. Your body fights pretty much any change you make, including eliminating coffee and candy bars. I can cite a large number of people I know personally who have these issues and have eaten high carb all their lives.
Making unfounded statements about how horrible fairly mainstream diets are is just as bad as making unfounded statements about how any diet is going to be the savior of us all.

Lets not forget that Michael Phelps made a big deal about hainvg 20K a day of Calories, mostly from Burger King.
This doet got him 8 gold medals. PLUS he did all this with almost zero steps. His main steps were around getting from the Locker room to the swimming pool. How lame is that? 🙂 🙂

I think I've tried that diet before. Yes, I remember it now! That was called "1987-2013" and it didn't work very well for me. 😉

Actually, it’s a lot less than that, though still a lot (compared to average guys like you and me). That was in 2008. Seven years later, he would need less than back then. You can use this formula (the same Fitbit uses) to estimate his TDEE (he’s 193cm/88kg/30yo). No way it would come even close to 20k.

I had to google this to get my memory back. Yep, it was not 20k, it was reported at 10-12K a day of calories and the actual food plan reported was all over the board. My point is I am pretty much willing to bet that no one reading our posts is consuming even 9K a day calories and not bloating.

If I remember correctly at his autopsy they found all of his Coronary vessles were patially blocked along with his Carotid arteries with atherosclerotic plaques. His body was a ticking time bomb. After these finding the Atkins diet soon lost favor.

I quote from the book Physiology of Fitness by Brian Sharkey who works at the Hyman Performance Laboratory at The University of Montana: The Low Carbohydrate advocates the near exclusion of carbohydrates. It's author states that the average overweight man should lose about 7 pounds in the first week( remember carbohydrates are stored with water). The diet allows a liberal intake of fat and all the protein you want- reasons enough to question the plan. Low carbohydrate diets are questionable for another reason: when blood sugar levels are low, the fatty acid molecules from adipose tissue are shipped to the liver where they are converted to ketone bodies to provide energy for the manufacture of glucose. excess ketone bodies spill over into the blood and are carried to the tissues where they are oxidized. During starvation or a low carbohydrate diet, the production of ketones can exceed the bodies ability to remove them metabolically. When this happens, the excess is called ketosis, and the main danger is the lowering of the blood Ph (metabolic acidosis). Pages 137-137. If you are not a Physiologist, you should not make staatements like eating a low carbohydrate diet does not lead to metabolic acidosis.

His wife declined to have his body autopsied, which is really common, so that's not correct.
But there are a ton of myths going around his death, so I'm sure someone said that at some point too.

Just to clarify another point, I have seen medical professionals confuse the terms "ketosis" and "ketoacidosis" before, thinking they are the same potentially dangerous state.
They are very, very different.
