Lifestyle tips for a person in a dorm situation

Hey all, I am looking for some tips or direction for my dietary situation. I don't much self control when it comes to sweets, carbs, and cheesy type foods. I have a problem with my portion sizes and they are quite large. I sort of in a dorm type situation, so I don't get much home cooked meals. Most of the food that's served are carbs or diary type foods. I also live on a small budget. I've tried many diets and so far not many have sticked. So I am really interested in finding something that will help me change my lifestyle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

P.S. Thoughts on vegan, vegetarian, and paleo diets are welcome!

When you're in college, the struggle is real! First off, if you are not already doing something vegan, veggie, or paleo, I would suggest holding off on those until you have a plan established that works for you. Those are wonderful goals, but it takes a lot of time and effort to follow those plans when you are at the mercy of the cafeteria. Especially paleo... 

 

What I often did for homework was take a book/audiobook (when available) to the gym, and do the stationary bike or elliptical while doing the reading. While that approach might not work with calculus, it should be okay for history! If you are at the cafeteria, opt for any types of fruit/vegetables available over pizza or sandwiches, if you can. I often did salads, but I know that can get boring quickly, so you can add fruit, meat (or black beans), and cheese (in moderation) to the salads. Basic rule of thumb if you get tired of the bunny food: Just avoid fried. In the dorm life, that's enough to take care of 50% of the problem. If the floor gets 10 pizzas, grab a slice or two, but stop after that and don't get breadsticks. Cutting out sodas (and caffeine, when you can... if you can...) helps a TON. A lot of the drink machines in dorms/cafeterias have teas that look innocent enough, but they are still loaded with high fructose corn syrup. Cutting out the sugar drinks, if you haven't already, should make a huge difference. But doing it one step at a time so you don't get overwhelmed, absurdly sleepy, and cranky will help more than any "8 steps to thin!" program.

Hey there,

I just finished up my freshman year of college, and I lived in a dorm. Starting in January of my second semster, I decided to give the paleo diet a try. I was able to lose 30 pounds by May and have lost 8 more pounds since then. I am now 5'8 and weigh 155 pounds. In my room, I kept fresh vegetables, almond butter, and coconut milk in the fridge and would eat/drink those things as snacks. At the cafeteria, there were always grilled meat and vegetable options. I don't know what your cafeteria serves, but they are bound to have meat and vegetables at almost every meal which is key. I also exercised 6 days a week doing strength training and very little cardio. When my weight loss began to plateau, I started running around 1-4 miles a day, but by that time, I was well in shape to do so.

 

A lot of people will tell you that the Paleo diet is not sustainable, but I have been on it for going on 6 months now, and I plan to continue so for the rest of my life. I have never felt better inside or out. It takes a huge adjustment, but if you can get through the first 3 weeks, you'll have a habit set. It feels as easy as breathing to me now.

For dieting, you must first have a goal, such as losing fat, so that you will be motivated to do it.

I have a great tip for college students - DRINK WATER.

Water fills up your stomach and you feel full for longer.
The only thing is that you need to know the right amount that you need to drink daily, which you can calculate using daily water calculator.
Why calculate? Because it depends on various factors like climate, activity level and so on.

After you start drinking that norm you will inadvertedly start losing weight.
Why?
Because you will fill up your stomach before eating and you just won't be able to overeat.
That's my secret to losing 40kg (from 120kg to 80kg) that I'm ready to share anytime with others.
