Over 50 on a quest for health

I'm 63 and need to lose 50 pounds.  Also, I am dealing with a recent ankle surgery and some shortness of breath, so it's time to get serious.  Looking for a female friend to support me and who wants my support.

Hi there, I'm going on 61 this year and I've already lost 16 lbs.  The fitbit I'm using is the greatest thing ever and I find that just walking and eating right is the quickest way to drop the pounds.  My personal goal is to loose a total of 25 lbs, so I'm on the right track now.  I wear a Ace bandage around my left knee just because it adds additional support as It otherwise tends to bother me.  If your doctor say's it's ok to put pressure on that ankle, then go for it.  Just take a few steps more each day until those lbs start to come off.  I hope this helps and I hope you have a quick recovery.  Thanks

I'm 65 and will eventually lose more than 50 lbs. Aside from being careful about the ankle surgery, my best advice would be to set reasonable and achievable interim goals for yourself.  I started at 254 and my first goal was 235; when I got there my next goal was to get to 219 (I'm now at ~221)...from there, I'll probably got to 205 etc. You need the positive feedback of making goals even though you have "miles to go..."

Hi,

I am looking to lose about 50 or more kilos and so far I have lost 10. It is slow going but I already feel the difference of having lost some of my excess weight. I am 59 and work full-time in an office, so tend to sit a lot!

My only form of exercise at the moment is walking. I don't go very fast but I try and do a little bit more each day. The weight loss means less painful knees which certainly makes life a little easier. I have also cut out sugar to help me along the way.

I've had bad knees since my teens, so I know what you mean. I recently started reviewing my walking records (Runkeeper) and found that at the beginning I wasn't going very fast (17+ minutes/mile) and slowly I started going farther distances and going faster. It takes time.

I'm 65, work full time and had a total of 50 pounds to lose when I started this.  Keep going at your own pace.

Hey, Im with you. Im 66 and have had recent foot surgery, but my ankle is still pretty bad. I have the ok to walk and Im up to 6000 steps. I plan on added more every week till I reach 10000. Its a real struggle to lose but I love my Fitbit and it keeps me moving. Snacking at night is a problelm for me, but overall I know I have to move more. Its really harder now but Im determined to be healthier by my Birthday in January.

Well, now I'm 66 on my way to 67 in March. I ended up losing over 80 pounds. I've had bad knees since I was a teenager. I've walked aggressively since May 2014, and have traveled a total of almost 1100 miles in 2015 alone and 512 since July 1st (I had bunion surgery on April 20th, 2015 and was off the road for 6 weeks during recuperation). I live in S. Texas and continued to walk throughout the Summer heat (+100° heat). I now walk competitvely at under 12:30/mile and I am learning how to race walk. I work out on weight machines at least twice a week.
