Overweight and undermotivated!

ANSWERED

I am 34 years old. I am 5'7" and weigh 178lbs. I am the heaviest I have ever weighed in my non-pregnant state and I am not happy about it. Mostly belly fat due to having two kids sand stress but my diet and appetite are not helping. I am at a constant state of feeling hungry. I take a multi-vitamin suppliment and see my doctor regularly but have never bought up my weight as an issue since I have never had an issue with it before. I keep thinking it will just go away on it's own. This is the first time in my life I am struggling with my weight and I am a little discouraged and confused at how to handle it. It seems the more I focus on it the more I eat and do not exercise. Anyone else in the same boat? Any one have some encouraging words or some advice to get me motivated?

Hi Amanda,

I've always had a problem with my weight and have literally been on the roller coaster since I was in my 20's. I'll go gun hoe and get into great shape (I even body built for a while) then I just stop.  No real reason except I just tired of having to exercise every day and watching every bite I take.  I'm headed towards weighing almost my heaviest but am struggling with just getting moving.  I've done weight watchers, which worked great but then I got laid off and am working a job making half the money so that had to go.  I know what to do and how to do it...it's just the motivation that is getting me too.  Maybe we can work together?  I'm going to start relying on my Fitbit and this community for my motivation.

Oh one more tip, I read this in a magazine. It has been shown that if you spend some money on your weight loss journey (obviously you have spent some money considering you have a Fitbit) it will keep you more motivated. Kind of like a "I spent all this money on this workout clothes so I need to use it" type of situations. I find this true for me. In fact I went for a hike up a small mountain near by on sunday and I actually hated it. I felt good about doing it but I was out of breath and my heart was racing more than I like. However I know that it was good for me and my Fitbit stats were so awesome that I decided I need to do it more (hopefully I can get to the point that I DON'T hate it by the end of this coming fall). So I decided to spend some money on active wear that should make me feel more prepared for my next climb so I don't have to think about that part as much, atleast.

As there is so tons of great advice here already I would love to help motivate you, even if it’s just via challenges on fitbit. I struggle with my weight also but in the last few months as I have started tracking my caloric intake I tried something to suppress my cravings. I don’t track fruits and vegetables. I do the “heavy” ones like potatoes and avocados (just a few examples) but I can have all the apples, bananas, fill in the blanks I want and it doesn’t count against my totals. This encourages me to eat more of the healthy food which tends to contain more fiber and nutrients that keeps me full. Just my two cents. I feel that most people struggles with weight issues, you aren’t alone so let’s keep each other motivated.

Hi,

I hesitated responding . you had so many great answers. But From woman to woman I know it is hard to be overweigt and not happy with how you look and feel insecure that perhaps you can no longer fit in that dress or shorts. For 1 year I really beat myself up. Tried it all. All kind of diets. I want to blame my weight gain on school and stress. Lately I found myself just tired of beating myself up and I am now doing something about it. I think you just have to get to that point where your cup fills in and and starts to spill. What help me is an online blog called Sparkpeople I was able to log in so far 209 journal entries. I went back to look at my entries and look for patterns - and closely examine my up and downs. Its like a "getting healthier " journal. You have to ask yourself what works for you and stick to it. And  take it 1 day at a time. Its a long journey.

Amanda, and all the above posters...maybe someone can start a FB group for
all of us. It sounds like we all have the same problem of motivation, and
the knowledge of knowing what we are supposed to do nutritionally, but just
don't for reasons known, or unknown to ourselves. Would anyone be up for
that?

In a nutshell

  • Eat real food as often as possible.
  • Cut back on fake foods and processed foods. Eliminate soda.
  • Eat in moderation.
  • Exercise. Walk, run, bike, swim, weights. Just do something!

You can do it! I lost 35 pounds at 54 years old.
