Today is not my Birthday

Today was one of my good friends Birthdays, who also happens to be my roommate.

I am new to FitBit (I have been using it for 10 days now) and I have already lost some weight (whoohoo).

For my friends birthday I made her cookies.  But while cooking I was hungry and ate some cookie dough...Then when she got home, we had some cookies together.... Then we went out to dinner with a bunch of friends and had drinks as well.

Now I am 350 calories over my alottment, and I have not eatten healthy food at all!

Does anyone have any tips for tackling days like this...all of my friends have birthdays and I want to be able to stay on track for the next ones coming up.

Thanx!

Hi and YES there is a way around this type of dilemma!  Couple ways to approach it, or multi-approach may be better.  First, you do want to PLAN AHEAD for days like this, and there are a lot of them, in order to continue to be successful.  You can start by being sure you have 'saved' enough calories in the day, so that your total for the day isn't too far off; and you can do some extra exercise - but that alone is not the best way to lose weight as you can never outrun your diet; and you can just adjust your thinking that what looks good for a moment is not going to get you to your goal and learn to adjust your thinking about treats.

There is no way a person can attempt to get through life without some playtime, including an occasional treat.  But you want to be smart about it and to recoginze that big word "occasional".  You said this isn't your birthday - do you plan to go all out on your day, or just indulge in a little treat like a drink or a small dessert? And think about the upcoming holidays too, known to throw the best of us off track!

Know in advance, plan your day, decide what YOU WANT out of the day so you have no regrets.  And remember if it's just one day, you dont' have to throw in the towel.  Get back on track, record everything (I use myfitnesspal but it looks like my new fitbit allows that too) including the food you didn't mean to have, get out and exercise and keep your eye on your goals.  Good luck to you!

Hi there,

I completely agree. Going and having fun with friends and family is what life is all about. Do not force yourself to miss out on special occassions because of your new food choices. It will back fire later either emotionally, with your progress, or both.

Have a plan before. When I go to big family get togethers I have started bringing one dish or appetizer I made myself. I know I can easily count what is on my platter, and can better plan for the other calories I eat as I go. Having support from family is also key. If it happens to be a masquerading enabling support, then it is important to be strong about your food choices as you go. Don't apologize for making healthier choices. Explain what is going, and most likely they will want to help, but be prepared to help them be better helpers if they aren't doing the best job.

Plan 2: Eat before going to the party. The best offense is sometimes preparing to not need the defense.

Good luck!
