Weightloss over 45! Any suggestions?

ANSWERED

Hi! I've found it's getting harder and harder to lose those extra 10 pounds as I get older. I am watching what I eat....I use weight watchers online which is awesome....and make sure I get exercise daily but I am still struggling to see the scale inch it's way down to where I'd like it to be! Has anyone else had this issue or anyone have any suggestions? They would be greatly appreciated 🙂

@JuanVB Yes, I agree. Having a restaurant visit as a reward once a month in front of the nose like a carrot works to keep the focus. My next visit will be a visit to a vegan restaurant that gets great reviews. I need need inspiration for how to eat more veggies and make it delicious, so that I can keep doing it.

This time around I've lost 14 lbs. Have had to take it in stages, it takes such time and focus. All in all, more than 65 lbs over the past 3 years.

Wonderful! I have been doing the same! For whatever reason I gained like
60lb over 6 yrs, then one day woke up and saw it and thought I got to get
moving! So I went to the gym -lost 33 lb's then stopped going last year,
now getting back on track, thank god I only gained 10 back(cause that's
enough)! So I am going to WW and having a very hard time to settle down
and follow the program, not taking the time to write things down!!! But
bought this fitbit and it is feeling good!

Hi everyone, this has been a very good thread. Lots of practical information here. I am 47 and been overweight for approx 27 years. Lost 20kgs about 5 years ago, another 20kgs last year but this year with all the crazy stuff life can throw at you the weight is creeping back on. Brought myself my fitbit, changed gyms (cheaper membership) and getting back to me time. Would love to take off the 10kgs I have put back on but its getting harder and harder the older I get. Doesn't help when the doctor tells me weight gain is part of menopause! Any motivation is welcome so please add me as a friend. Have a good day everyone.

@movingforward15 Yes, it has been a lot of back and forth for me too. Like holding onto a very slippery piece of soap! But the good news is that I have gotten better at loosing weight, finding out what works. Getting older has its advantages, I am 57. I am 22 lbs away from my goal, and then I will have a new goal: how to keep my weight stable. I have always gone up or gone down, never stayed the same. Not there yet, but it is something I think about. So lately I have become a vegan. It has been a very long process to get to that point, but I think it is neccessary for me.

Have you tried logging?  Fitbit's app is great for that, and I log my food religiously every day.  I just turned 68, and I absolutely agree that it takes more to lose weight after a certain age, but it most certainly can be done.  It's keeping it off and staying healthy in the process that can be daunting.  Don't use fad diets....as a matter of fact, avoid diets altogether.  I suggest eating a lower carb -- not no-carb -- diet, and exercising in a way that gets your heart rate up.  I found that just exercising daily wasn't quite enough any more -- the recommended 30 minutes a day just doesn't work the way it used to.  So kicking it up to 60 minutes helped a great deal, and even working a 40-45 hour week, I have managed to find the time.  Even just brisk walks for 10 minutes or more, or taking the stairs, biking, swimming, if you have access to a pool....all of these things add up.  Log everything.  It may take you longer than you would like, but be patient and diligent.  This isn't a race, it's a marathon.

1st: Always talk to your Doctor. He will be more than glad to help you.
I was walking like a crazy, counting calories, etc and until my Doctor told me that I have to cut my Carbohydrates intake under 100 a day,.... then i start losing weight.
It is difficult but it is always possible.
The Fit bit helps a lot and it will gave you the Miracle number 10000 steps and many tools on the website for you to track all from weight to calories intake and waste. That it is just the beginning.
I already lost 51 lbs and I am feeling great, half of my medications for High Blood Pressure and Diabetes II and down, ..... but the issue is to keep it up and make your body to LIE to your brain.
The body - brain interrelations are incredible and your body tells your brain 'I am feeling hungry' and your brain send hormones to storage energy all over your belly.
If you tweak your body's emotions doing something different everyday the body doesn't know what signals send to your brain and you will keep losing weight.
10000 steps is the basic but you have to do something different every day. For Example on the weekend I am walking 20000 ~ 25000 before the beginning of the day, after that to the beach. Couple of times during the weekdays to the Gym.
But you always have to talk to your Doctor.

Why you don't make that exercise fun?
Like music - download your best tunes and played during work out.
Like Book - do the same with audio books.
Like Nature - Find a Well protected National park every weekend
Like the Beach - long walks on the beach are good with you. Good salty air Free Vitamin D [ use sun blocker]
If you like Video Games get a Kinect... I discover this last week. Those cartoons are incredible and they never get tire.
To burn calories you better be in the Fat burning zone. Fitbit Heart Rate will shows that in the phone application. If You want to be in cardio or Pick you better be training for competitions.
My Doctor told me to just walk, walk, walk. I am walking up to 10 miles Saturdays and Sundays.
Low impact, low possibilities to have injuries, more time training.

.... Always find something that you like and it hasn't to be so hard because you will do what you like
What is your Maximum weight lost goal?
My goal total is to loose 150 lbs. I divided that in 3.
1st down to 300 lbs (completed)
2nd down to 250 lbs (32 lbs to go) ( my planner say that I should read that by February)
..............................since August until Oct 30 I lost 51
3rd down to 200 lbs
4th and Final (reshape my body) My Doctor wants for this to happen for Nov December 2016.

Hi, I appreciate all you've written with regard to your weight loss struggles.  I too have always had to watch what I eat.  I lost 35 lbs. 3 yrs. ago (yes, I'll be 53 y/o in a few days, lol) with the help of the Jenny Craig plan and the metabolic armband that they had partnered with at that time, BodyMedia. I've kept the weight off. But it's a daily struggle.  I completely agree with you about the restaurant food.  It is truly the kiss of death to weight loss success.  Avoid going out to restaurants as much as you possibly can.  That said, it is okay, probably even vital to your weight loss/maintenance success, to allow yourself a restaurant meal on occasion.  I've found that there are certain places where I'm able to eat better and control what I take in, more effectively.  I like a food bar for the ability to put the healthiest choices on my plate.  Yes, it comes with its own risks, going to a place like an "all you can eat" spot.  But I stick with baked chicken and overload my plate with green beans and cooked carrots when available. Then I add fresh fruit where I would usually have had dessert.  I had one more little trick, more mental than anything.  I allowed myself to look around at the people who were clearly not concerned about what they were eating, or how negatively the junk food and large (and multiple) portions affected the way their bodies looked.  I have to say it helped to motivate me to put down food that was just plain unhealthy. I am a believer in any food in moderation.  But the truth is, that until you feel strong and in enough control of your willpower, it's a bad idea to eat dessert.  That and breads are just a nasty, slippery slope.  I also have found that I never need to look for bread to put on my plate as it is in almost everything we eat already, right?  🙂  As for the life challenges (moving, friends visiting for long periods of time, etc.) they will always exist.  I have my own, a double disc fusion in 2001 for a couple of herniated discs.  Unfortunately the pain didn't leave with the surgery.  It's a daily struggle.  It's better to kind of psych yourself up for those times and just accept that those situations will always be there to add to your challenge.  But you can do it.  A nice side benefit of eating right when others are watching is that you never know when you will be a source of strength to someone else who is desperately searching for theirs!  Lastly, I used to wear that armband (worn high up on the left bicep, per the manufacturer's instructions) every day without fail. It was a wonderful ice breaker and conversation starter.  I could be standing in line at the grocery store and someone would ask me what was that thing on my arm?  It gave me motivation just discussing it with others and how great it worked for me.  I have since upgraded and replaced that old armband with the Fitbit Charge HR.  Please know that with the success of losing your weight, comes the added challenge of keeping that weight off (some say the latter is much harder to do).  I realized that I was never going to wake up on one magical day and just feel like I wanted to start losing the weight.  That was when I knew it was now or never. For reference, at the time I was working the BodyMedia plan I had a step requirement of 8,000 minimum per day (I tried to do at least my 8k daily) and about 1350 calories per day.  It took me somewhere around 3 months to get that 35 lbs off.  Good luck reaching your goal.
