I have the same issue as in my job I sit most of the day but I do a walking program 5 days a week for 3 miles, make my 10,000 steps per day 7 days a week.  I've been using the fitbit one since mother's day and it's been a great motivator but I haven't lost maybe a half a pound.  I pretty much stay in my calorie goal.  I don't know if it's related to starting menopause and if I keep doing what I'm doing it will eventually just start going?  But it's very frustrating not to see any changes on the scale.

Well, not that it should wipe out a 1000 cal deficit - but do you weigh all food that goes in your mouth, measuring only liquids.
Gotta ask because some are not aware that calories is per weight, not volume. 9 cal per gram of fat, right?

Even weighing packaged items needed, because "about 2 servings" can be way off when weighed.

So I'm actually thinking the opposite direction, since 1000 is might big deficit already.

You don't track Spin bike, and even if Flex saw every turn as a step - the calorie count would be very wrong.

Flex is going to underestimate your trainer stuff - unless they are watching you run or walk.

So do you manually log better calorie burn estimates of all this non-step based activity that Flex is going to be underestimating, sometimes badly?

You may have much more than a 1000 cal deficit.

That and all the exercise is a big stress, at least your sleep is good.

While training more can increase water retained in muscle for repair, and your training could be causing more glycogen to be stored with attached water too - that has an upper limit and after 3 weeks should be seeing inches as fat drops even if water weight is going up.

But the body isn't going to make improvements if it's already slowed stuff down because of being threatened with level of deficit - which I'm betting is much more than 1000 calories. Why make improvements to body that require even more energy, if it's slowed down due to lack of it.

I know those workouts don't sound intense, only 500 calories in hr plus time, but if that is Flex's estimate, it is more.

I hope there is more than 40 lbs to lose with a 1000 cal deficit, which is about only time that would be reasonable.

Your metabolism isn't burning calories like it once did.    This isn't anything unique to you...it is typical for 50 year  olds who have desk jobs.

Find someone who is your age and target weight and see what they do to stay trim.  You'll likely find out there are no shortcuts.    Exercise to build muscle mass and stay as active as possible through out the day.  One or more days of week should be very high activity...25K or more of steps from a long day of hiking, chores or 3 hour bike ride.   Do not estimate the fidget factor.   Set a timer to get up every 50 minutes if you work at home.

I am 50 and think that over 750 deficit is difficult for me to reach on a regular basis without feeling drained and foggy.   I just can't lose weight like I once did and I'm having to learn how to stay trim with a slower metabolism.

So you use the HRM in the gym, and manually create a workout to replace the Fitbit calories then, right?

So HRM is going to be inflated calorie burn for anything but steady-state aerobic cardio, where HR is the same for 2-4 min.

The formula for calorie burn related to HR is based on providing oxygen, and if you are constantly up and down, the HR is inflated compared to what it needs to be. Like intervals or most workout classes have HR going up and down too.

And if you are doing lifting - it's inflated too because if that is done right it's anaerobic, not even aerobic. Besides being opposite of steady-state HR.

For strength training, find Weight Lifting in the database, power lifting if your lifting is to almost failure, light if you are using the pink and purple dumbbells with high reps and little effort.

And yes it seems like low calorie burn for the time - and that is absolutely true. Better estimate than HRM.

And if this is a cheaper Polar like FT4/FT7, it's missing an important stat to even give a chance of decent calorie burn estimates - VO2max.

It assumes if your BMI is bad, your fitness level is bad, which is bad assumption, because you can get fit faster than you can lose weight.

But more than that, studies have shown for women, even with lab tested stats used for VO2max and HRmax on nicer Polar's, it was still upwards of 12% off.

http://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/pages/articleviewer.aspx?year=2004&issue=08000&article=00024&type=...

So your Fitbit daily burn may actually be too much if you are manually correctly those workouts based on HRM. Even steady-state cardio if cheaper Polar.

Which basically means you could be eating too much.

But with 40 lbs to go, at least 1.5 weekly is reasonable, or 750 cal deficit.

I need to join this no weight loss chat...

Was on weight watchers last fall for 3 months; no loss

Counted calories for another 3; no loss

Got FB, figured calories in vs calories out should do the trick, no loss!

Was doing 5 miles per day either walking or eliptical with 1200 cal/day, but now its too hot & humid here for 5 miles, but still doing 3/day on eliptical  with 1000 cal in.

down 2 pounds, up one, down one, up 2....

Thyroid OK, eat breakfast, stuggle to get the water in (hardly ever make that), post menopausal...weigh EVERYTHING, even count my tictacs

ready to give it all up and say this is the way I am!

Do this.

Figure that you've suppressed your body by 20% daily burn by your dieting choices up to this point.

Gotta just suck up the fact you burn less than you could. And Fitbit is reporting what you could burn.

So take Fitbit daily burn value x 0.8 = suppressed daily burn.

Now eat 500 calories less than that.

Now, exercise with suppressed body like that is not nearly as effective, you may get sick, and you'll be eating barely anything if you don't exercise, so don't get sick though you'll be more prone to it.

Do you weigh your food that goes in your mouth?

You weigh your body, right.

Calories is per weight, not volume, so grams counts, not cups or spoons, not even quantity. (except tictacs).

If you do and are sure logging is accurate, and not leaving out binge days or meals, then follow advice in post above.

Except in your case, you need to find 500 calories more to exercise daily on average.

Or heal your body from the abuse it's received through the years of big deficits.

What is your daily burn with you only eating 1000?
