Hi. My Dr. says I'm pre-diabetic. When I asked him what to do he said, "Lose weight". When I asked about specific diet ideas, he said, "just lose weight." So, I've been exercising. What sort of diet should a pre-diabetic person use?
Thanks, Denver Dan

Me 2. Get rid of sugar. Substitute Truvia which may give you diarhea. Then try Splenda. Lower the carbohydrates. Cut out bread or buy artisinal bread in health food stores. Eat brown rice pasta if you need pasta. Plain Fat Free Face yougurt or Skyr yogurt. Eat organic chicken very little red meat and then organic rat reduced. Eat some lamb. (They are so cute it really hurts. ) You could have fat in your liver which makes it harder to loose weight. You need an MRI to check your liver. Look at Overeaters Annonymlous diets. there is one called brown sheets. Check out Dean Ornish diet books. Eat purple potatoes because the color has an antioccident quality. Eat organic blackberries.
Sleep in a room at 66 degrees. (NYT article) Get checked for Apnea which would mean you would need a CPAP machine.
My endo who is an old man who teaches in a medical school, says that Medeteranian diet is best. Probably somewhere around 1500 calories is good
provided you walk walk wak and work out a bit. I do 75,000 steps a week and i am 68. Keep a journal.

I just replied but I have to say I have aggrssive docors at a top tier medical school in NYC. They have me check my blood sugar in the morning. My A1C is 5.9 which is now
prediabetic. They also follow my cholesterol and my LDL is below 70. My HDL is about 75. They believe that having a very low LDL is helpful in preventing heart disease.

I have to add that my cardiologist follows my blood chemistry carefully. Not only does he believe in a LDL below 70 and that means lots if statins but I take three fish oil capsuls a day to to lower triglycerides When i started to take statins I got the muscle pain so they gave me CO Q10 to offset them. Elevated triglycerides is a feature of prediabetes.

My fasting blood glucose was up to 97 and THAT concerned me. I am pretty active and in the "average" BMI (if you lend credence to that ) but the "functional medicine MD" I am seeing a few times a year believes low 80's and even high 70's is optimal and not to look at "average". I picked up Dr. Hyman's Ten Day Detox and am on day 7. Well, between starting this and Day 7 my fasting glucose (I take it in the mornings with one of those cheap little meters) has gone from 97 to 81! I figured I could do anything for ten days, right? Only have dropped about 2 pounds, but look at the drop in glucose! No caffeine, no dairy, no sugar or artificial sugar, no grains...but you don't get hungry. It is the excess insulin that causes your body to crave and hold onto fat.
But now that it is down, it will be my responsibility to see what foods I can add slowly back in without raising my glucose back up. I will leave grains and sugars gone for good, except for special occasions, but I'd like to bring back black beans, coffee, full fat yogurt, etc. The glucose meter is necessary. I got mine off amazon.com for about $15 several years ago. Good luck, Dan!

I believe I have side effects from Metformin for per-diab. Loss of energy, light headed/dizzy, and tired.. I read about effects of too much Metformin and now dr. took me off of it a few days ago and I am starting to feel better. Has anyone experienced similar problem.
