Bikram Yoga

I've seen a few posts on yoga yet want to know more.

I love Bikram yoga and practice 4 times a week for 90 minute sessions; I'm addicted to my Fitbit and getting those steps on yet if I walked 90 minutes I'd have so many steps, I'm just guessing right now but I'd say 6,000 or 7,000 easy....it bums me out that 90 minutes of HOT yoga only logs about 600 steps.

I log it in as activity yet that doesn't help this obsessive mind who wants MORE steps.

Is there a solution? or should I just be happy knowing I'm doing so much activity?

Just be happy.

Yoga is not step based so its not going to count steps for it. Be grateful for the 600 you do get.

I do Bikram too and just got my fitbit. This is extreme exercise! When my husband was in a walking program at work he could log in hot yoga and it would convert the 90 minutes into equivalent steps. Wonder if that is possible in some way?

I am right there with you Lainie.  I do Bikram too and just got a fit bit, I know it has to be equivalent to thousands of steps.  Seriously...I want to know a realistic number to program for this.  Any help out there???

I know. I still have no clue how to make this equivalent to steps.

Most of the activities listed in an activity to steps conversion chart are not step based. That's why the chart is so helpful. But since Bikram is not on any of those charts, we are left to guessing. Even if you were to multiply using the figure for "regular" Yoga, which differ from chart to chart, you can easily determine that Bikram is at least 8000 - 9000 steps. I usually just guess using an activity that gets my heart rate up like Bikram does.

Hi Lainie,

First off: well done on the 4x 90-minutes of Bikram every week!! That's a stellar feat! I'm a Bikram instructor living and teaching in Geneva, Switzerland. I've practiced an average of one Bikram class per day for over 15 years. While I love most asana practices, you and I know Bikram is special, and extra challenging 🙂 Even if FitBit isn't giving you steps (and I am new to FitBit, so I don't know all the ins and outs), know that you are doing something incredible for your health and well-being. You see it in your muscle tone, your skin, your smile, and even in how you treat those around you after a good class.

When I taught in Dallas, I had many students using fitness trackers. They would often tell me after class they had burned 600 or even 700 calories, or sometimes more than that. As a woman, you could use the 600- or 650-calorie mark (which is probably low, but it depends on the individual) and apply the equivalent number of steps in your log.

Please keep up the strong practice, steps or no steps!
