We live in "Steinbeck country" (Salinas Valley/Monterey County), named after the famous author John Steinbeck. And just as Steinbeck documented his journeys with his beloved dog in "Travels with Charlie", I'm going to photojournal in this thread my "Travels with Melody".
A lot has changed in Salinas since the days of Steinbeck. But some things haven't changed that much. Today we visited the childhood home of Steinbeck, which has been restored to its original beauty.
Down the street from the Steinbeck House is the Steinbeck Public Library, with a bronze statue of the author at the front entrance. I don't think Melody's ever seen a statue before. At first she was puzzled that he didn't greet her - or even flinch one little bit.
Then she surprised me and became downright ornery!
So I took her back to to dog training school for some proper obedience training. Of course, she passed with flying colors.

Thanks for the kind words, yes that is my picture I had taken of Molli. I shot it with my Nikion D90 several years ago as Molli was running.

Thank you very much! When my daughter brought Molli home she was to stay only 3 days until her new owners finished moving. Molli was aout 6 months old and was on her 3rd home by then. So I wonder if that story was all that true but Molli has been with us ever since. Looking back now our daughter gave us a new best friend.

My idea of fitbitting with Piggy's best friend is simply putting the tracker on the dog:-D
Just kidding of course.....no dogs allowed in the parks over here...

Yesterday we went down to the Salinas River, which is flowing at a trickle, and Melody came across a crawdad (and I came across a photo op, lol)!

@rightdx Awesome pictures! I love how nature is. That's a very big crawfish! I think Melody only wanted to play with it! ![]()

Thanks for the nice comments. Fortunately, Melody was smart enough not to get any closer.
Crayfish are not very high on the menu around these parts and I've never actually eaten one. I've heard them referred to as "freshwater lobsters", so I was tempted to take it home and have a crayfish boil, lol.

You mean you've never had Crayfish Gumbo, @rightdx? ![]()
I was stationed in Shreveport, LA, for a while, and I got to try a lot of their regional Cajun foods, including Crayfish Gumbo. Not bad if they put enough spices in it....

@LucyAP Thanks Lucy. I think Melody is a little spoiled. We're always looking for somewhere off the beaten track we can go off leash.
@USAF-Larry I went to New Orleans once but missed out on the Crayfish. I did a Google search, and it turns out these are red Swamp Caryfish, originally from the southeast, but invasive to California. They are apparently an invasive pest! We came across quite a few, btw. I may just go back, help the environment, and have myself some crayfish gumbo, cajun style, lol.
